Comments about Shimano SH-R088 Wide Road Shoes:

Tried tons of shoes. Even tried lakes since they were good for wide feet. the normal lakes were too thin in the toe box for me and the wide lakes were too wide in the heel.

These shoes however aren't as stiff as the carbon soled lakes I tried. I still chose these because i couldn't go longer than 20 minutes without my feet hurting in the lakes. These vent real well and keep your feet cool. Very good fit and stiff enough for my use. Enclosure system is very nice I like the boa system but the velcro and ratchet aren't as bulky. I couldn't find a better shoe for the price.

          information for wide-footed cyclists

Comments about Shimano SH-R088 Wide Road Shoes:

I'm posting feedback about these shoes to help any other wide-footed cyclists.

What you need to know about the test conditions (my feet):
I usually wear size 10, 4E width ("extra-wide") in New Balance and Nike street shoes. I have wide mid- and fore- foot, flat arches, a small heel, and a normal height instep (a.k.a., "duck footed"). Typically if a cycling shoe is wide enough to accommodate my forefoot, my heel is loose. I also pronate to the inside of my foot. And the cleat fore-aft position I require differs approx 3 mm between my left and right foot.

The first thing to be aware of is that these Shimano SH-R088LE (wide) shoes are only width "E". Normal width for is "D". Wide shoes range from E through EEEEEE, i.e., E, EE, EEE, 4E, 5E, and 6E. So Shimano SH-R088LE (wide) shoes are only slightly wide, a difference in width comparable to the difference in width between shoes 1-2 sizes apart, i.e., the width difference between sizes 44 and 45/46.

                For comparison:
I have been riding Diadora Aerospeed 2 in size 45 (normal width, not wide). These are comfortably wide with room in the toe box, but loose in the heel and longer than my foot to provide the width I need. Getting the cleats forward enough to be in the right position was a challenge, due to running out of adjustment range. The fit while riding is a little sloppy, as my foot shifts very slightly due to loose heel and extra length. But overall, they work well for me.

Now, how the Shimano SH-R088LE (wide) shoes fit me:
I went with size 44. They are snug all over, as they should be I suppose, but maybe I'm not used to, since no shoe I've tried has ever accomplished this. The forefoot could be wider, but they seem to have stretched out some after a few rides, and seem a little more comfortable. My heel is held tightly, again unusual for me. Buckles and straps in the middle of their range. The toe box is roomy and follows the length of my toes, without being longer than needed. The tongue is tight against my instep-ankle, but feels right after a few rides.

A nice feature is that the cleat bolts on the shoes are slotted, allowing some extra fore-aft adjustment, in addition to the range provided by the slots in the cleats themselves. I set the cleats in the center side-to-side, and the distance from my feet to the cranks is right for my wide feet, but could be adjusted inward or outward if necessary. I am noticing a difference from my other cycling shoes, in the angle of my foot in relation to the pedals, but this can be fixed with some cleat wedges (bikefit.com) to angle my foot up on the inside to a neutral position.

The Shimano SH-R088LE (wide) shoes fit me better than any under $100 road cycling shoe I've tried. So I bought 2 extra pairs.

I hope these personal observations help any other wide-footed cyclists considering these shoes.
