So I bought the slx to replace my rather unsatisfactory derailleur (hint, not shimano) and noticed immediately that it was going to work better just based on the shadow technology since I knew it wouldn't be sticking out and hitting rocks (something i actually do quite a bit). Once it was installed though I knew it was going to pay for itself very soon, the shifting was awesome and because there wasn't a ton of adjustment knobs I didn't have to worry about it getting out of whack much. My favorite feature was, like I anticipated, the toughness and shadow technology. This thing can take a beating, i've crashed the bike, dropped it multiple times on the drive side and accidentally kicked it but it still worked wondrously. The shadow technology helped protect it from a thousand other hits though, and that alone helped preserve the thing. My one and only complaint? I can no longer enjoy the product since my bike was stolen last year (saddest day ever). I highly recommend this as well as all other Shimano products, they always keep getting better and last forever.

This was great for xc riding and lasted maybe 50 miles total before being ripped off by a twig/stick a little larger than a pen. To me it seems far too fragile. Had a Shimano LX from 2005 that lasted until April 2012. The SLX only lasted one month. For a budget derailluer I would go with the LX over SLX.

Comments about Shimano SLX RD-M663 Rear Derailleur:

Having only had the cheaper stuff on past bikes the difference between this derailleur and the stock acera stuff is pretty amazing. Ive never had the XT stuff so I cant compare the two but if your thinking about this one buy it its a good one.

Never had a problem with a Shimano derailleur. Had the 9 speed version of this derailleur on my old bike and put the 10 speed version on my new 1x10 29er. Works like a charm.

I have this derailleur mounted on my Surly Cross Check (I wanted to have a 11-34 cassette for off road and touring). It's great - I've hardly had to adjust it over the last two years of hard riding, and the shadow design really does a good job of reducing chain slap. Pairs well with Tiagra brifters, too.

Bought this 2 years ago when the wheels on my LX derailer gave out. It was about the same price as new wheels for the old derailer! It is quiter and smoother shifting than the LX, plus the cable routing is better. Now that is on sale I'll buy another to have when this one wears out. It has taken a real beating on some big rocks and crashes with no problems.
