Shimano Ultegra 6800 Tubeless Wheelset

Shimano Ultegra 6800 Wheelset

In the wake of the success of the 11 Speed Dura Ace 9000 group, this year Shimano revealed that the 11 Speed sensation was moving down the line to the more affordable Ultegra 6800 group. The new Ultegra 6800 wheelset is a tubeless-ready design and employs a wide flange hub and offset rim to ensure optimal stiffness and efficiency. Upgrades on the Ultegra 6800 Hubs go beyond the addition of an extra speed! In order to bring the Ultegra tubeless wheels up to date with the new 11 speed suit, the 6800 hubs have been updated with a new freehub that features a new cone digital adjustment system designed to diffuse quick release tension, reducing the load on the bearings to enable smoother spinning and increased durability. In place of the double lock system normally found on most cup and cone hubs is a ratcheting ring hidden under an end cap. To adjust it you simply remove the end cap with a 5mm allen, and rotate the ring to eliminate any play in the bearings. No more messing with cone spanners! Hubs weigh 10 grams less than previous version, allowing the wheelset to weigh in at 1,640 grams (claimed).

Lightweight and good quality
I bought the wheelset to replace the original wheel which came with the Giant Defy Comp 0. The weight is lighter and it is more responsive when I sprint or accelerate. Tubeless ready so you don't need any rim tape. Well build. You cannot use any tire level to open so putting in new tire does take some times without the tire level.

I picked these up after my stock rear wheel was giving me issue. I spent A LONG Time deciding what wheel to get and these fit the bill. Several Hundred miles after having them for 3 weeks and I have hit potholes and jumped bumps and they are still true as day 1. I am 255 lbs and ride aggresive. I believe Shimano makes a great wheel and will back them up if problem arises. They are 11 speed, but will work with 10- adapter included. They will also work tubeless. Maybe try that later...

Solid Wheelset
I got these at a great price and they've been one of the better wheelsets I've had so far. The tubeless conversion was fairly simply and the wheels feel great. Light enough to race and strong enough to train on. My only qualm would be the front wheel is a little flexy, but nothing too bad. Maybe I need to cut down on the burritos.

best wheels ever
I upgraded from a set of Mavics. I felt the difference immediately. Wheels are more responsive, and power transfer is more efficient. Climbing and acceleration have improved. Overall ride quality has improved. I have heard from other riders about breaking spokes, however I in the Clydedale club. Im 5'9 at 215 pounds. I do a bit bodybuilding and focus a lot of my strength in my legs. With that being said I can easily pedal up to 35mph on straightaways, I have yet to have problems. I dont recommend braking on descents though.

Can't Beat the price for these!
$420 is a great deal for these wheels.
Only have few hundred miles on them but so far a solid wheel.
Like the easy maintenance aspect on the rear hub.

Have not gone tubeless yet but it comes with the valve stems and is tubeless ready.

Shimanl Quality and Value
I will start this review by stating that I am primarily an all trail mountain biker currently, but I do have a decent carbon fiber road bike that I like to ride occasionally, particularly when it's too muddy to go trail riding, going for a nice ride on the paved bikeways can be a good workout. I had gradually upgraded all the components on the road bike till the only item left to improve was the wheelset, which was pretty much entry level. So when I saw the Shimano wheels at a very competitive price, I jumped on them, having looked at some pretty pricey alternatives.
Going tubeless was something that I did on my mountain bike with great results so it seemed logical to do the same on road bike.
I paired the wheels with Maxxis Padrone 23C ties, put them on with not a lot of trouble and the sturdy levers that come with each tire, and was off.
Everyone says, "I'm not a weight weenie." but I did weigh the before and after and saved a significant 600 grams! And the difference in rolling resistance was unbelievable. Now,I look for excuses to go road riding. These wheels make me feel 20 years younger.
They are Shimano quality throughout, the hubs are smooth, the braking surfaces perfect.
If you are looking to for an upgrade that will give you the most for your money, consider upgrading to these wheels. You will not be sorry.

Great improvement
I upgraded from the Bontrager SSR, which is an entry level wheelset. I immediately noticed the difference, the Ultegra is definitely lighter and the bike is more responsive when accelerating and transfers power more efficiently. I can feel the bike accelerate quicker form a stop and feel better response when I am pedaling off the saddle at full power. You can use the rear with a 10-speed cassette with a spacer that comes with it, I didn't even have to tune up the rear derailleur when I swapped the wheels. I'm looking forward when it comes time to change the tires as I'm going for the tubeless.

Is a spacer included to run 10spd cassette?

Is this wheelset compatible with a 10 speed cassette?
Stephen on Apr 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes using the included spacer on the back of the cassette.
Looking at these and a set of Conti GP 4000 S2 tires. Tires come in 23/25/28. I'm a group rider 25-40 mile rides, 5'10" 205lbs, mostly decent road and asphalt trails. Question is which width tires?

Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II Tire
Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II Tire
BEST ANSWER: Get the widest you can fit on your bike. Be aware that the actual width AND height of the GP 4000 , and pretty much any tire, will vary from the nominal size. For instance, my 28 mm GP 4000s are about 30.3 mm wide. My 25 mm ones are 26.6. You can probably look up the actual width and height on the web.
Will this wheelset mount clincher tires also? Or is it tubeless only?
A shopper on Jan 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I'm 99% certain that you can. I just bought these to go tubeless but haven't mounted the tires yet. The on-line literature calls them "clincher tubeless." The user's manual, such as it is, references "Clincher wheel/Tubeless wheel." Both types of tires have beads; the tubeless have a special profile that helps seal to the rim along with the latex goo on the inside. You'll have to remove the tubeless stem from the rim in order to use a tube with the standard clincher tire. A stem removal wrench is provided with the wheels.
Oops one more question. When purchasing tires, I like the Continital Gran Price tire but I've read there are difficulties mounting the tire. What tire would you all reccomend and would that be a wire bead or foldable tire?
A shopper on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: At the risk of being accused of "passing the buck", my best recommendation is to call Jenson USA and ask for Lee Baldwin. He'll be able to recommend the best tire for your intended use. He suggested a Schwalbe he had on sale for my Ultrega wheels and the first time the guys at my shop saw the new hoops they were surprised I knew about (and rode) such a quality tire. I order everything through Lee, he's great! Btw, I had zero problems mounting them on the rims and they ride super-well.
Best luck, TU
What do I need to set these wheels up for tubeless tires?
Jeremy A on Apr 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They come with tubeless stems, but you will need tubeless tires and a sealant kit. If you prefer you can remove the tubeless stem and use regular tires (1/2 price) with conventional tubes. You can switch back at any time, the stem simply unscrews. Please remember these rims cannot be handled with pry-bars, you must use the technique listed on the instructions or follow the online videos for more detail.
will these fit a 8spd cassette?
fernando S on Apr 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, however you will need the 1.85mm "11 to 10 speed" spacer that is included with the wheels.
I appreciate all the answers so quickly to my question yesterday. So, another question before I move forward with the tubeless wheel. When mounting and riding a tubeless wheel like the Ultegra 6800 is it necessary to use sealant in the tire for potential goat head flats? If a person uses sealant is changing out the tire messy down the road when changing flats or doing in house tire rotations?
A shopper on Jan 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There are a few things you need to know:
(1) Never use pry bars / spoons on the rims edge it voids your warranty and damages the wheel. Mount one lip of the tire onto the rim and gradually the rest of that side onto the rim. Center the tire compressing it into the rim carefully and finish getting the other side on.
(2) Remove the cover on the stem and apply sealant evenly, there are no cavities so you will not have too much trouble cleaning any residue.
(3) Changing flats is difficult on the road, if you can use a little more sealant it may work however if it is a gauge you will need to use a tube and you will need to remove the stem when doing this. The stem is easily removed twist the cap and slide the stem out, no hassle. If you suspect you will be changing a tire be ready, remember that tubeless tires are far more expensive then regular tires and tubes.
Does this wheelset come with skewers?
A shopper on May 29, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes - it comes with Ultegra skewers.
Are the spokes bladed or Standard?
Dan on Jan 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The spokes are bladed
Could these wheels be used for gravel rides and accommodate tire up to 40mm?
Bart R on May 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I use them with 23 mm Continental Grand Prix 4000 tires and strictly for road rides. You'll never do well on gravel with these tires and I don't think you'll do well with 40 mm tires either. If you ride loose gravel I'd recommend a larger tire width and a different wheel set.
Are the spokes stainless steel?
Sagenator on Mar 31, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I believe the spokes are stainless steel, but am not 100% certain of that. I love the 1 piece wheels and have ridden them many miles with complete satisfaction and would buy them again if I were in the market for wheels.
Another questions. When mounting tubeless who uses sealant and if you do, is it messy to clean up to rotate tires or repair flats? I like the Continital Grand Prix 4000 tire but I've heard its difficult to mount is there another tire you all would reccommend?
Greg J on Jan 9, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I like the wheelset. Lightweight and responsive. I am running Continental Grand Prix 4000 tire with tubes.

It is VERY difficult to install the tire. The instructions say not to use tools to install tires. I believe that is to protect the seal for tubeless. I have had two bike shop employees mount the tire on the rim without using tools. They gave me tips and said it was more technique than thumb strength. Even after instructions, the only way I can mount the tire is using a plastic tire iron, and even with the tire iron it is not easy. Steve S.
Are the spoke nipples brass or aluminum?
