Shimano XT RD-M772 9SP Rear Derailleur

The New Shimano Shadow Rear Derailleur places priority on a low profile design for riders that are at home on technical trails.  The derailleur has a profile that is a full 15mm narrower than a traditional rear derailleur. That means it does not protrude more than the quick release skewer nut.
  • Top normal spring design to mesh with the more common choice of RapidFire shifters for trail/all-mountain riding
  • Direct cable routing reduces the chance of the cable snagging on roots and rocks
  • Stronger spring keeps the derailleur body more stable in rough terrain
  • Redesigned bracket axle keeps the derailleur body from contacting the chainstay
  • Designed to allow for easy wheel removal
  • Weight: 227g(GS), 235g(SGS)

Great Shift-No fine tuning Adjustment
Was great to install. But when it came time to run the cable, I found out that it did not have an adjustment screw for fine tuning. When I looked into re-using my old Deore screw, I saw that the XT did not even have the threads to install an adjustment screw of any type. Unless the screw type is outdated to a new type (which was not included) I have to really play with the cable end stop to tune it. But the kicker is that the instructions have notes about how to tune with an adjustement screw once the cable is installed.

Smooth clean shifts - great price
Got this with a medium cage for a 2x9 setup, LX shifters. I was immediately impressed with how smooth the shifting was. MY other bike has an LX mech and the difference was notable. Great price, excellent quality.

Good upgrade for reliable shifting
Upgraded to this from a non-Shadow LX. Was easy to install and tune. Has held up well so far and shifts smooth eliminating some chain slap. For anyone looking to boost a 9 speed drivetrain to that next level, it's very much worth the price.

Crispiest shifting I...
Crispiest shifting I have ever felt. I upgraded from a 4 year old LX, and oh man, it's about 40% lighter, and shifts like nothing I have ever felt before. It's just so... smooth... like silk.A bit pricey, but well worth it.

I have used this...
I have used this derailleur for over a year without experiencing any of the problems of previous reviewers. I use the derailleur in conjunction with current spec XT shifters and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have tuned the derailleur up once in the last year and even at that point it wasn't really necessary. I have logged hundreds of miles on trails thought the state as well as hundreds of road commuting miles. This derailleur has survived every riding situation confronted. The shifting is precise, smooth and very direct with the higher spring rate in the shadow design compared to the traditional style Shimano derailleurs offered. I guess there are bad apples in every bunch which explains some of the other reviews but mine has been one of the most trouble free components on my bike. 2 Big thumbs up from me.

I'm a 5'9", 160-lb guy who who does not finesse his way through the woods. I ride single-track pretty brazenly, often riding at the edge of my abilities. And I look for opportunities to get airborne. This is simply to say that even though I'm light, I'm not easy on my bikes; I pound on 'em.

Hence, I'm not usually in the market for the lightest component. I like to strike a balance between ruggedness, functionality, and price. I don't try to shave a few grams by spending an additional $200. So, the XT line of components is often where I look first.

I've built two bicycles with the M772 XT rear derailleur now, and I have nothing but good things to say about them. They are straightforward to install (if you're used to doing your own wrenching), easy to adjust, and remain in tune. I put more than 4 years of riding on my last XT RD, and the only thing it ever asked for was a cable replacement once, when the cable and housing got corroded inside. Aside from that, it simply kept shifting and shifting, with an occasional turn of the barrel adjuster on the shifter. Simple. The low profile prevents snags. And the rugged construction survived more crashes than I care to recall.

Note: When you first install this thing, do so in a well-lit area. The black paint makes the markings and inside of the body hard to see, so setting the high/low limit screws can be difficult in dim environments. So build yours up outdoors, at noon.

Note 2: I pair mine with XT shifters...

Feels tighter than prom night
For those with negative reviews take your bike to a LBS. I installed this derailleur in 10 minutes, with little adjustments needed this derailleur worked perfect right out of the box!

I have a ten year old Giant Trance with a broken 9 spd. XTR rear derailleur. Will this shadow type derailleur work for me?

What's is the difference in cage length?
Josh S on Jul 16, 2017
Anyone get this to work with a 36T cog? TIA
Andy on Apr 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Andy! If you are referencing the rear cassette I don't think anyone makes a 9 speed cassette that went to 36 teeth. If you know of one, GREAT! That derailleur should work fine with a 36t cassette provided it is 9 speed. Depending on your front end set up (2 or 3 chain rings) I would recommend the SGS option.
Is this compatible with 10 speed Dura Ace shifters?
lee c on Feb 27, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I am using it with 10-speed shimano 105 shifters and their 10-speed shifters are all compatible.
Does this derailleur have a clutch on it?
Cameron S on Apr 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No this derailleur does not have a clutch,
it is shadow type with strong cage spring which helps to reduce chain slap.
I have a 2003 giant NRS non shadow type. 11-34 9 speed will this work?
Mike M on Feb 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this will work just fine, with better clearance - shadow deraulier will be less likely to hit rear pivoting chainstay.
(I was running the same setup)
Will it work with a 8 speed cassette?
Murray L on May 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Should work fine, although you'll want to make sure your shifter and chain are also 8 speed.
