The New Shimano Shadow Rear Derailleur places priority on a low profile design for riders that are at home on technical trails.  The derailleur has a profile that is a full 15mm narrower than a traditional rear derailleur. That means it does not protrude more than the quick release skewer nut.
  • Top normal spring design to mesh with the more common choice of RapidFire shifters for trail/all-mountain riding
  • Direct cable routing reduces the chance of the cable snagging on roots and rocks
  • Stronger spring keeps the derailleur body more stable in rough terrain
  • Redesigned bracket axle keeps the derailleur body from contacting the chainstay
  • Designed to allow for easy wheel removal
  • Weight: 227g(SGS)

The Shadow technology works well to keep the profile of the derailleur low and close to the bike. Another benefit is the more direct cable routing that removes the "loop" Shimano is so famous for (and which is the cause of so many shifting problems on poorly maintained bikes).

With that said, it can be very tricky to get the derailleur set up well. Some combination of the more direct cable routing and operation of the derailleur means it is very picky about cable and housing condition and routing. It takes me longer to set up these derailleurs than on the non-Shadow models.

The shifting on the derailleur is excellent when it is set up correctly and it has eliminated a lot of the derailleur to chainstay contact noise.

Was great to install. But when it came time to run the cable, I found out that it did not have an adjustment screw for fine tuning. When I looked into re-using my old Deore screw, I saw that the XT did not even have the threads to install an adjustment screw of any type. Unless the screw type is outdated to a new type (which was not included) I have to really play with the cable end stop to tune it. But the kicker is that the instructions have notes about how to tune with an adjustement screw once the cable is installed.

Comments about Shimano Deore XT M772 Rear Derailleur:

product works great. crisp shifting and was easy in install. only thing I didn't like was there was no adjustment screw on the derailleur it's self for cable tension. so you need one on your shifter for this product. big upgrade from the Alivio

Comments about Shimano Deore XT M772 Rear Derailleur:

Initially, I thought the derailleur cage was a bit bent. I chose to install and use it anyway, thinking a slight angle was normal. Apparently it's not, as the derailleur double shifted right into the spokes of my wheel, bending the cage further. It was installed and adjusted properly, I think it was a singular defect and will try it again.

Bought this to replace a well used Alivio 9 Speed. What a difference! My Alivio was still working well, but I just couldn't help getting an upgrade anyways. Very easy to install, took me about 40 minutes.

Comments about Shimano Deore XT M772 Rear Derailleur:

Basically set and forget, it only goes bad if it goes out of alignment from a strike or stick. Last unit lasted 4+ Years and was working flawlessly until a stick went into the wheel. Shadow style protects the tucked in unit better from hits and straight cable routing keeps shifting action light. Only downside is that pricing for this older 9 speed model is sometimes more than similar 10-11 speed version!

On the FSR and other rear suspensions, the GS cage can not take-up all chain when on the smaller cogs & smallest chainring--but the SGS cage can--no more keeping in mind to stay out of those gears.

Andy! If you are referencing the rear cassette I don't think anyone makes a 9 speed cassette that went to 36 teeth. If you know of one, GREAT! That derailleur should work fine with a 36t cassette provided it is 9 speed. Depending on your front end set up (2 or 3 chain rings) I would recommend the SGS option.
