Featuring Shimano’s innovative Shadow clutch technology, the Deore XT rear derailleur is designed for today’s aggressive style of trail and all-mountain riding. By maintaining chain tension, the Shadow system eliminates chain slap and lowers the chances of dropping your chain. Other improvements include reduced noise and rotational drag as well as a low-profile pulley cage for better clearance over harsh terrain. Why choose an XT derailleur over a cheaper derailleur? Built for heavy duty and long life in demanding trail conditions, the XT's overall linkage is stiffer and has a more machined construction, increasing durability and stiffness, which also increases shift quality. The pulleys are also of a higher quality, and spin easier for less drivetrain drag. The whole derailleur is built to exacting standards and will last significantly longer than a cheaper derailleur as well.

Don't know which cage length to choose? Choose a long cage "SGS" derailleur if you have 3 chainrings on your crankset, and a medium cage "GS" if you have 2 or fewer front chainrings.

  • Compatible with 10 speed drivetrains
  • Uses Shadow derailleur clutch
  • Low profile pulley cage
  • Weight: 258g

I bought this derailleur to set a mountain bike up as a 1x10 with a narrow wide chainring and so far have been very pleased with the results! I have taken the bike on several rides, and have really enjoyed improved shifting performance and have yet to experience a chain drop (knock on wood). If you're looking at this product, you probably know that XT is one of the industry standards in balancing quality, performance, and durability; this derailleur is no exception!

Installed to replace a non clutch XT mech (stick ripped apart the direct mount hanger), works well out of the box and shifts well. Unfortunately though, it seems to be made out of cheese and could not survive a small knock which bent it to the point I cannot get lowest gear.

Just simply not worth the money when you are paying for light weight materials that cannot take any knocks, it is mountain biking after all.

All in all, 4 months of bliss, should be at least 4 years.

Comments about Shimano XT RD-M786 Rear Derailleur:

Shimano XT RD-M786 Rear Derailleur was a great improvement on my mountain bike. Replaced an older Shimano XT rear derailleur w/out clutch. I was skeptical, but the clutch really makes a big difference. No more chain slap, no thrown chains, very fast precise shifting. This was very easy to install. First time I've replaced a derailleur, and it was fairly simple. Would definitely recommend, especially for the price. Very inexpensive for the amount of performance improvement.

      Good Derailleur

Comments about Shimano XT RD-M786 Rear Derailleur:

Good derailleur for pretty cheap. Not sure how Jenson can sell them for less than 1/2 the price of my LBS but whatever, win for me. First time with a clutch and it's very nice and quiet for those choppy descents. Only issue i have is the chain jumps off the cogs when backpedaling to get started.

Comments about Shimano XT RD-M786 Rear Derailleur:

The shimano XT is as solid as the XTR but at a much for wallet friendly price. You can't really go wrong with this derailleur. Makes for an excellent upgrade or replacement. The shadow+ clutch makes for a smooth quiet ride. Out of the box I need to make no adjustments to the limits.

First of all purchasing items from Jenson is painless. Awesome customer service. I picked up the Shimano XT M786 rear derailleur as one part on my 1 x 10 conversion with a 11-42 cassette. The mech installed easy, adjusted easy, shifts like butter, and with Shadow + technology it's easy on the ears.

                      A:

Yes, assuming that your cassette and crank are 10 speed, this derailleur will work fine with your crank and cassette. You need the "long cage" option to accommodate your current gear range. Make sure to select that option in the drop down menu when placing your order.
