Comments about Shimano XT / WTB Laserdisc Trail Wheel:
The Shimano XT 756 hubs are as durable as anything you will find. I bought my first set of Shimano XT wheels 7 years ago; at that time they came with a Mavic rim. It was a very well made wheel. After 7 years of hard trail riding, they are still true without interim adjustment on spoke tension.
The bearings should be inspected, lubed and adjusted every thousand miles or so. On arrival, the bearings were too tight, and I had to loosen them a bit. Thereafter, no adjustments were done for seven years.
This season, I noted a rumble in the back wheel bearings. I had (despite thinking about it) never lubed the bearings in those seven years and few thousand miles. Bad. Yes, bad me. I thought about it last season, but did not do it. They are easy enough to service. When I pulled the cone out this year, the brake side bearings were fine. But the cassette side bearings were black and wasted. The cone was a bit scared, the cup scored even worse. I ordered this new wheel. While waiting for arrival, I cleaned up the cup and cone, and put in some new bearings ($1.80 locally), lubed it up and adjusted the tension properly. It felt rough at first when it was on the bench, but after 8 miles of riding, the bearings are running smooth with no rumble, friction or drag. I did an eight mile descent today at high speed. Checked the bearing tension at the end - fine. No heat, no apparent friction. Running smooth as can be. So now I have this new wheel, but the old wheel is running fine.... So I have a spare....
All I can say, is this Shimano 756 hub is a classic. The wheel around them is well made and stays true. It take the bumps and knocks.
Why pay more for wheels, unless you are a racer looking to shave off a few grams of weight for racing? This current Shimano build looks as good as the old one with the Mavic rims. I will tell you in seven years how they lasted.
