Shimano XTR BR-M9000 Race Disc Brake

Shimano XTR BR-M9000 Race Disc Brake

Being able to comfortably descend fast and technical terrain requires complete confidence in your equipment. At high speeds, nothing instills more confidence than knowing your brakes are ready and able to deliver unparalleled control and reliability in any situation. Shimano XTR brakes are arguably the best performing hydraulic disc brakes on the market, offered in two flavors: Race and Trail. The Race model is Shimano's lightest hydraulic brake ever, a minimalist, lightweight version with a magnesium caliper and master cylinder. The Trail model offers a bit more adjustability with a minor weight penalty.

To provide high-powered braking performance with no compromise, Shimano introduces the new wave of XTR Race M9000 hydraulic disc brakes. The caliper and master cylinder are constructed of magnesium while the lever is made of carbon to provide XTR braking performance in a lightweight, race-ready package.

Shimano was the first in the industry with full ceramic caliper pistons, but that’s not all that set XTR braking performance apart from the rest. The new XTR Race M9000 brakes also feature a newly redesigned carbon lever for improved ergonomics and insulated pistons to shed performance-sapping heat, allowing the XTR M9000 brakes to maintain cool, quiet performance under extreme braking.

Shimano XTR Race M9000 Brake

The new XTR Race M9000 lever sports an all-new ergonomic design, allowing riders to precisely control 25 percent more power with highly-adjustable and responsive one-finger braking.

  • Magnesium Caliper and Master Cylinder
  • Newly redesigned carbon lever for improved ergonomics
  • Tooled reach-adjust for further weight savings
  • Hinge-clamp mounting bracket
  • High-power hydro hose for uncompromising performance
  • Combine with I-spec II bracket for shifter to reduce handlebar clutter
  • G02A Pads come stock, a Resin pad compound with aluminum backing plate

Light, simple, high quality
I use these as intended, on an XC race bike and a fatbike. When bled properly (use procedures in videos available), they are reliable and consistent. Not the highest power being the race 9000 version, but you can adjust this with rotor size. Great for those looking to control weight on a race-build. Have also used these down to about -20F in winter on the fatbike. At those temps, they performed pretty much exactly the same as my dot brakes during the same conditions. Stiff, but worked. If I was riding in significantly colder temps, I'd think about going with dot fluid brakes.

Shimano XTR BR M9000 Race Disc Brake
These XTR brakes went on sale, so I grabbed a set. They replaced a set of XT brakes, which are more powerful, but 200 grams heavier. The XT went on my trainer, and these are on my Ibis Ripley Race Bike. They do the job, and I have zero complaints. The swap was so simple ANYONE can do it with basic skills and a few good tools and some new zip ties. At $200 plus 10% off and free shipping, these are a great deal. XTs still rule, but these brakes are excellent. Tahoe Xterra courses are not rough. if you are doing high speed downhills, better use the heavier Shimano rotors. I use Ashimas and they have never heated up unless the DH is long.

Very nice brake
I needed to replace my old hayes disc brakes as they didn't withdraw the pads enough to not drag slightly. I couldn't be happier with this XTR rear brake. Great feel and stopping power in a very light package. I've gained soo much confidence in this brake it's the only brake I run. The front brake was removed for a "back to basics" approach and I have NO regrets.

I can't say they perform noticeably better than the XT brakes they replaced but the XT brakes weren't lacking in performance. They are noticeably lighter and the bling factor is also nice.

Does this brakes comes with a line hose and brake pads?
Bee B on Dec 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: YES this is a complete system, and you can install it on the bike right out of the box and go riding. brake pads are new. It doesn't hurt to bleed the system, as in transit the air bubbles do get moved around, but it comes pre bled from factory.
Do these brakes come with extra olives & nozzles in case you need to cut the hoses shorter?
jed on Jun 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes. Each brake comes with an olive & nozzle/barb/insert. The front brake also comes with a bleed block & the blocks to hold the hose when installing the nozzle/barb/insert
The claimed weight on this site is 182g/wheel. The average weight posted on Shimano.com is " Weight: 316g (Kit for front)". This is a massive discrepancy, which is accurate? Also on Shimano.com the SLX brakes are the lightest brake they have. Why if the Xtr race is their premium light weight brake?
Justin on Nov 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The XTR's I purchased for the front were 188 grams out of the box, and 181 grams after I cut the line to length. The rear was 206g uncut/ 200g cut. My 180mm front rotor weighed 142 grams w/ hardware, so my total front weight was 323 grams. My guess is that Shimano's "kit for front" weight includes the rotor.
For the SLX, I did a quick google image search for "SLX BR-M7000 brake weight" and most were 260-290 grams for 1 lever, line & caliper w/ pads. This seems in the ballpark with the weight on Shimano's website (264 grams). So a pair would be 520-530 grams vs 181+200=381 grams for XTR's."

levi.porter, a Jenson USA customer

Yes it's just weird Shimano would not post weights for the exact same thing or specify rotor included in weight. The XTR weight must include the rotor but the SLX posted weight does not even though they're labeled the same. Not ideal advertising imo. Thank you for your response!
Do these brakes come with extra onions & nozzles in case you need to shorten the hose length?
jed on Jun 5, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Per description on this site the G02A Pads come stock
does this ahve a reach and a free stroke?
chode on May 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this brake has reach adjust at the lever, which you can adjust with a 2mm Allen key. Free Stroke is only available on the XTR Trail M9020 brakes, as they have Servo-Wave technology.
does this come with pads?
Kort on May 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: yes
Does it include the adapters for mounting?
Upa on Apr 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No adapters. Only bolts
I have a 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 29ER.
