Shimano XTR BR-M988 Trail Disc Brake

Riding comfortably at speed requires an unconscious, intuitive confidence in your machine. It requires knowing that whatever conditions you come across your brakes will be ready and able to deliver reliable control in any situation.

Say hello to XTR Trail brakes, and say goodbye to compromise. The integration of Servo-Wave brake-boosting technology into an XTR-level brake generates gobs of lightweight stopping power (125 percent of the previous XTR benchmark, to be exact) that can be precisely rolled on and off with single-finger effort—leaving a better grip on the bar.

With industry-first full ceramic caliper pistons, radiator-fin-backed brake pads to shed performance-sapping heat, and innovative IceTech aluminum-core rotors(sold separately)to even further keep heat buildup at bay, these all-new brakes maintain cool, quiet performance under fire.

As the most powerful and most controllable XTR-level brake of all time, XTR Trail absolutely assassinates wide-open descents with uncanny consistency, delivering more confidence than ever before.

  • Approximately 250 grams for the front (lever, caliper, and hose)
  • Uses Shimano Mineral Oil
  • Includes lever, caliper, and hose
  • Post mount calipers

Levers:

The new XTR Trail lever delivers big power. As the first XTR lever equipped with Servo-Wave, riders can precisely control 25 percent more power with highly-adjustable and responsive one-finger braking.

  • 125% Power rating
  • Short-stroke Servo-Wave mechanism for quick engagement
  • Tool-free reach-adjust
  • Free stroke adjustment
  • Shorter, wider 14-millimeter brake lever with more efficient pivot location
  • Hinge-clamp mounting bracket
  • High-power hose for uncompromising performance
  • Combine with I-Spec (Type B) bracket to reduce handlebar clutter
  • Metal pad compound with Radiator backing plate (standard)

Calipers:

Whether coupled with the XTR Race or the XTR Trail lever, the new forged one-piece M985 caliper delivers a balance of light weight and power that resists performance-sapping heat better than ever before thanks to an industry-first full-ceramic piston and optional Ice Technology radiator brake pads.

  • One piece forged post mount caliper
  • Oversized ceramic piston (opposed 2-piston type)
  • Aluminum banjo hose fitting

I've installed these onto a Cannondale Rush Carbon with 650b mod. I've used a lot of great brakes over the years, most recently I was running Magura Marta SL (180/160) and was overall very happy with them--lightweight, powerful, simple and reliable. No adjustability, though, and that made for tedious setup (bleeding and bleeding again). These XTRs were a snap to bleed (with the funnel tool and a syringe) and they are POWERFUL. Somehow, modulation is also amazing so controlling this power is a wonderful experience. I'm using XT IceTech rotors (160/160) and these have significantly more power than the Marta SL setup with 180/160. Much better modulation, too. I don't know how they did it... but these are the best brakes I've ever used. I can't imagine anything better (I wouldn't know what to ask for). Could always be lighter, but these things are already [*] light. I think further weight savings would be the only way to improve upon this perfect brake. The added cost over XT might be hard to justify as performance is likely identical. I feel as though I paid for impeccable build quality as well as excellent fit and finish. If you're on the fence, don't be. Pull the trigger and buy them.

Jenson refused to help me and I had to order the correct part from another retailer. Do not deal with these guys. Poor customer service!

Comments about Shimano XTR Trail BR-M988 Disc Brake:

These are hands down the best brakes I have ever owned. I ride really hard for All-Mountain and have put thousands of miles on these brakes. Before this I owned Avid Elixer Carbons and Hope M4's... Avid were junk. I had to bleed them from time to time and they made a god awful sound no matter what I did to them. Hopes were great and powerful, but needed tweaking/bleeding as pads wore thin. These XTR brakes are amazing. I literally forget they are even on my bike. I installed Jagwire Hiflow hoses on them when I first got them (because I wanted all white housing) and I have not had to bleed them since... still work like new with over 1000 miles on them. My pads are about done, but have worked like a charm since day one.

The only thing i would say is be careful about too much mud or dust getting built up in the lever area. Its not the pivot you have to worry about, but the little action guide hole thing that is just above it. It caused my levers to stick a bit halfway through the action, but after cleaning that out and putting a drop of lube on each slot, it was like new again.

I hear the XT Brakes are just as good, although I have not tried them to confirm. These bad-boys are expensive, but frankly worth every penny. It will def make you a better more confident rider. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

These are the slickest and best feeling brakes I've ever used. I went through two previous bikes with Avid Elixirs and there is simply no comparison to these. I feel in total control on all the aggressive descents that my local trails have.

Once installed the early rides have been great, the modulation is so much better than what I was using before (Avid X0) I was blown away. Riding on the snow/ice make this so critical, the confidence has definitely improved.

Trimming the lines to proper length is easy and unintimidating thanks to Shimano's design and simple bleed methods. All the parts and tools are included.

The feel is amazing, which makes the high cost easier to swallow...

Comments about Shimano XTR Trail BR-M988 Disc Brake:

These brakes replaced the Formula brakes that came stock with my bike. The Formulas squeal when braking making an embarrassing sound, which made me try not to brake too much.

Replacing the brakes actually helped me go faster because I know when I hit the brakes, the stopping power will be there, without the embarrassing sound.

These brakes are great. It has taken a couple of rides to get everything set. Powerful, lightweight, and a great design. On my previous systems the rear brake has always been a touch off in power and would not have a firm feeling in their actuation. Not with these. The progression of power applied to the rotors is just how I like my brakes to feel. Very progressive with firmness at the end of the stroke.

Comments about Shimano XTR Trail BR-M988 Disc Brake:

Over the years, I've upgraded from mechanical disc brakes to hydraulic. My last bike came stock with Avid 5 brakes which were prone to fade on descents. After installing the Shimano XTR M988s, I was astonished at how much more braking power I had (without any braking noise). Additionally, the ergonomic brake levers facilitated one-fingered braking; something I found difficult to train myself to do with longer, heavier levers. Overall, the best set of brakes I've owned so far.

The XTR Trail brakes have outstanding stopping power. My setup includes the IceTech 180mm rotors on an all-mountain Specialzied rig. Riding in Washington, it is wet weather riding most of the year and these brakes delivery awesome stopping power even in the wettest, sloppiest conditions. Easily descend a steep 500-1000ft trail with no signs of brake fade. I have yet to find the point where these brakes fail to deliver predictable stopping. This is a product that has exceeded my expectations and lived up to all the XTR hype. I would highly recommend these brakes to any aggressive all-mountain or xc rider. By far, one of the best upgrades for my bike.
