These pedals rock and they are the only ones I will use from now on. I've used them on XC trails, Freriding and DH courses. They always provide a stable platform that I can get clipped into easily and out of in a pinch. I highly recommend these pedals.

These pedals worked great for about nine months. They felt like platform pedals, which is appealing for BMX and gravity MTB racing. However, at the nine month mark, they fell apart. The cap of the pedal that captures the end of the spindle fell off and it was impossible to repair. When I called Shimano expecting that they would replace the pedals (they were still under warrantee), they said that the warrantee did not apply to these pedals and that I would have to pay over $20 for a rebuild kit. I am a fan of most Shimano pedals, but the fact that these are not very durable and that they are not covered by the warrantee is a major turn-off.

Right pedal disassembles itself on the trail.

Comments about Shimano PD-M545 Pedals:

I used this for around 20 days or so on my downhill bike. The cap on the right pedal unscrews itself and then the cage flops around. This is a known issue with this pedal, read reviews here and elsewhere.

Great pedal

Pros

  • Good Pedal Clipped Or Not

Cons

  • Not so light

    Comments about Shimano PD-M545 Pedals:

With bad knees, I don't always want to be clipped in, except for climbs. These and the Time Ataks are comparable (Time's are lighter), but with these having the spd clips are more user friendly.

      Comments about Shimano PD-M545 Pedals:

I have bought two pairs of these pedals and with both sets, the right pedal falls apart because the end cap comes off. Same issues that Robert from Calif. had in his review. I have these same pedals in a 1998 version with the solid frame and they still work great. I have two suggestions: go back to the old design, or put an opposite hand thread on the right pedal so it doesn't unscrew it's self.

easy in and out of these. hit it off of several rocks and no worries. This is bomber. A bit heavy if you are going for extra light.

Greats set of of pedals, I use them on my 29-r Mountain bike. The aluminum cages are a big plus over the nylon cages on the cheaper models and allow for a quick ride in regular shoes that have a grippy tread on them. Smooth soled shoes may slide off.

            Comments about Shimano PD-M545 Pedals:

These are the best clipless pedals I have ever owned, and have been riding the same pair for probably 10 years now. I recently purchased a second pair, and not because the first broke, but just so I don't need to swap them out every time I change bikes. I've used these extensively for both XC and downhill riding, and while more suited to my XC rides, they do the job nicely for DH'ing also. I would recommend these pedals over any other SPD set I've used.
