Shimano XTR BR-M987 Disc Brake

Behold the Shimano BR-987 Disc Brake, the lightest hydraulic disc brake system ever to the XTR line! The M987 features the very same command and control of the preceding M985, while burning off 40 grams per wheel. Utilizing a magnesium caliper and master cylinder construction enables weight to be dropped while maintaining system stiffness and control by properly managing heat. Additionally, the caliper is compatible with the improved heat absorbing ICE Technology finned disc brake pads capable of reducing heat by 40 degrees. The disc brake levers also do their fare share of shedding weight thanks to the carbon fiber lever blades, titanium bolts and aluminum washers for a secured fit. The M987 levers are I-spec compatible allowing your handlebars to remain uncluttered and restriction-free.

  • Magnesium BL/BR ,carbon lever, titanium caliper bolts with aluminum washer for snug fit at recommended torque (no over-torque required)
  • 40g lighter per wheel than previous M985 brakes
  • Ergonomic lever shape, orbit
  • Total design of heat management – new RT99 heat absorbing power equal to RT98+Finned pad!
  • I-spec / B-type compatible
  • Ice-Tech finned pad compatible
  • Reach adjust (tool)
  • Easy and clean bleeding
  • One way bleeding caliper
  • Easy funnel bleeding

Comments about Shimano XTR BR-M987 Disc Brake:

I replaced my XT 785 Servo-wave lever with a M987 lever (101 grams actual, lever-only). It feels substantially "mushy" at the very first contact; I actually re-bled it because I thought it was air in the system. Turns out this is only because I was used to the "snap" of the servo-wave XT levers, where you get braking torque as soon as you take up the freestroke. It feels more like a car brake now, with modulation available at the 1%-30% application range that's completely absent in the servo-wave levers.
Having now ridden it on the trail, the difference between servo-wave and non-servo-wave is not really noticeable at speed (i.e. >8 mph). As my rear brake, I adapted to a natural braking impulse with the 987 lever extremely quickly (still running servo wave on the front). If you're actually braking, you go right past the "mush range" that the servo-wave takes up without noticing; modulating speed on descent (legal trail speed limits, right?) is indiscernible from servo-waves. Or, if you're just dropping a few mph to corner or comfort brake, it's completely natural and has wonderful feedback, brake feel, and modulation ability, without the "grab" you get from touching on the servo-waves. I think these as a whole system would make it feel like a more variably capable braking system and lead to more refined braking and thus more speed (think non-servo wave as Fox RLC with near-infinite adjust, while servo-wave is more Fox CTD where you get off/half/full). Also, it's less jerky (but less "decisive" feeling) in the technical stuff with the modulation-capable application, as opposed to the servo-waves that make you think you're going OTHB once the pads bite.
