I use this on a 3x9 set-up on a 29-er mostly used for XC type riding. Had several SRAM 11-34 cassettes before (PG950,970,980). I like the 12-36 ratio much better, since the jumps between gears at the high end are a bit smaller. It also means my 44 up front gets useful earlier, which saves me from wearing out the small cogs on pedally stretches. I don't use the 22-36 lowest gear a lot, but the 36 does come in useful in those situations where you can't look ahead and suddenly have to go up a steep bit in the middle ring.
Shifting is smooth, no problems whatsoever. I've only put a few hundred miles on it but so far the wear is minimal.
I would definitely recommend this cassette for 29-er owners, and also for 26-er riders who like a high cadence. Great product, great value.
THe only reasons not to buy are if you have and aluminum cassette body, or you're a weight weenie.

The CS-HG61 cassette is made with individual cogs riveted together. As such, it is NOT compatible with an aluminum freehub.

Pedaling torque is not distributed over the entire freehub as it would be if the cassette were made with a cog carrier in the center, so it causes each cog to dig into the grooves on the freehub.
After a few months, that damage can get so severe that it may be necessary to essentially destroy the cassette (prying off individual cogs) in order to remove it from the freehub.

Unfortunately, this appears to be the only cassette available with a 36T low end, so if your freehub is made of aluminum, the only options for using this product seem to be:

1) If possible, replace your aluminum freehub with a steel freehub. Not all hub/wheel manufacturers offer this option.
2) Use a cassette with an internal cog carrier. There do not appear to be any such products that have a 36T low gear, so that also means you must have stronger legs.
3) Plan on replacing the freehub and possibly also the cassette if you ever need to take the wheel apart.

Comments about Shimano HG61 9 Speed Cassette:

I paired this Cassette with a 38t single chainring up front. I get that great climbing power still and I get alot more speed when I get down in the high gears. The combination of the 38t and the larger cassette give me the best of both worlds with not only climbing ability but the ability to fly on downhill and flat sections.

Comments about Shimano HG61 9 Speed Cassette:

Installed this cassette on my 2013 Salsa Mukluk fatbike with a Raceface 30t N/W chainring, gear range seems perfect for a fatbike in this area. I definately lost top end from the stock 2 x 9 setup, but who needs top end on a fatbike in the snow. The low range seems about perfect. If i can't climb the hill with this low gear, its faster pushing anyway.

I thought this cassette was going to be super heavy, and its definately not superlight, but its actually about 25-30 grams lighter then the stock 11-34 that came on my Mukluk 3.

Just installed on a steel cross bike that was converted to a commuter. It shifts well and paired with a Wolfstooth 36t chainring, it has enough range to cover almost every hill here. I'm not a weight weenie, but don't need the left shifter or front derailleur.

The description says "29er" but works great so far even on a 26" bike. I have a 2009 Giant Reign x2 with the following (1 x 9)setup: This cassette 12-36 w/32T. It's an AM setup bike but with the 12-36 rear allow me to climb next to the XC fellas. Love the quiet and simplicity of this addition..an AM setup with the ability to climb like an XC.

I wanted a 2nd pair of wheels for my 29er,one for street ,one for trail. My original 34t cassette was not very fast/efficient for street. The new 36t is a noticeable improvement on the 1st ride.It is sometimes slow to shift into top gear but am sure it can be adjusted. It's also very quiet. The Mavic blem rims are also very nice. The Magura brake discs seem very rugged and have more grip than the original Tektro discs.I'me keeping ALL of the items!

I can use my middle ring for the majority of my climbs, but when the going gets tough, my 22t small ring turns my 26" mtb into a hill-climbing tractor! I have this on a M629 hub, so it shouldn't explode... It seems a bit heavy, but you'll never notice it with these gears. Shifts smooth with my Deore LX shifters, too.
