An incredible value in an offroad clipless pedal from Shimano! The M520 pedal features adjustable in/out release tension and includes a set of SH51 SPD cleats with 4 degrees of float. While they only weigh slightly more than the higher-end XT and XTR pedals from Shimano, they boast all of the same features and the same high-grade performance at a fraction of the price. These pedals will serve you well and wont break the bank. Dual sided mechanism lets you easily clip in with a simple step, without looking down at your shoes.

Compatible with shoes drilled with SPD compatible (2 bolt) drilling, but can be used with 3-bolt (Road style) shoes with the use of cleat adaptors.

Weight: 370 grams (weight does not include cleats)
Float: 4 degrees
Material: Aluminum, Chromoly Spindle, 9/16"

I put these on my fixed-gear, which has 1,300 miles on it (since November '12), so the mileage on the pedals is less than that.

They were my first pair of clipless pedals, so I didn't want to break the bank. I've been 100% happy with them. They're solid, they clip in reliably every time (and you can hear/feel it, so you know you're in), and I haven't adjusted the settings because the defaults worked pretty well for me.

They've taken a fair bit of abuse without any issues (there's a few dings and paint chips, but functionally they are still 100%).

I haven't taken them off-road yet, but I would be pretty confident doing so: my road riding has encountered a fair bit of mud/grime/ice, none of which interferes with the pedal operation.

The only negative I can think of is weight. At 370g (w/o cleats), they're a little heavy, but you get what you pay for. If weight is an issue, then go with a lighter, more pricey option.

Side note: I have size 12 feet, and I've been using these with Chrome Truk SPD shoes, which aren't lightweight by any stretch of the imagination. I also will sometimes go out for a quick spin wearing street shoes, and the pedals are plenty comfortable/grippy even without cleats.

All in all, these are a good buy if you're considering making the jump to clipless pedals.

Decent pedal, a bit heavy

I used these almost year before I had to replace the non-crank side pedal, one of the bushings or bearings was destroyed after a couple of pedal strikes while mountain biking.

I used these almost year before I had to replace the non-crank side pedal, one of the bushings or bearings was destroyed after a couple of pedal strikes while mountain biking.

These are very good for a first timer, the engagement is easy and intuitive, and the adjustability is great and makes releasing the foot again very easy to learn. I would try these again, but would be a lot more gentle with them.

Liked the size and white color option. But, I tried two pairs of these pedals - both failed after several rides. They started giving a clicking feeling. Warranty replaced them, but after two tries, I went with something else.

                  Comments about Shimano PD-M520 Pedals:

I have used these pedals on my bike for about 3 years now. I recently was having some trouble clipping in with my right foot so I ordered some new pedals. Before I got the new pedals I replaced the cleats on my shoes and it turns out the pedals still worked like brand new, I just had worn down cleats. I have really abused these over the last couple years so much that almost all of the black paint is worn away but they still work perfectly well. Couple drops of oil once a month are all it takes to keep these running basically forever.
