I got these pedals for my casual fixed gear commuter because I LOVE riding fixed clipless, but sometimes when I'm just going a mile or so I just wanted to stick to regular street shoes, and these were the answer. Good bearings, tried and trued SPD cleats, really no drawback. Great for any bike you plan on riding with both clipless and urban shoes. However I would NOT recommend using the flat side for MTB; it's not nearly sticky enough for trails. I think of this more as a commuter pedal than an MTB pedal.

I bought these pedals for my commuter, and I'm happy to have the option to ride clipless or with street shoes. That said, I wouldn't necessarily call these pedals the best of both worlds, as the platform side is barely grippy enough. Some commenters mentioned struggling to find the right side of the pedal, however I felt like this was not a problem, as my feet could feel whether I was on the right side. If you lift the foot off the upside-down pedal, the rotation of the cranks will flip the pedal for you, and when you put your foot back down, it will be right-side-up! Granted, it is another thing to think about, but you don't need to take your eyes off the road. I wouldn't tell anyone to stay away from these, but I have my eye on pedals with more grip on the platform side if I were to get this kind again.

Wanted a pedal for my hard tail that I could use on trails, but could still hop on to ride around the neighborhood with my kids. This fit the bill, I have used for both neighborhood and trail, and worked great for both.

        Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I use these when touring because regular SPD pedals tend to feel as though they're about to punch a hole in the sole of my shoe after about four hours of pedaling. The A530's are a major improvement. I also like to have them on my cross bike so that I can run quick errands without changing into cycling shoes. I gave them only four stars because they could probably be made lighter.

          Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

Having never used clipless pedals before I wasn't sure what I was getting in to. I've ridden about 100 miles with these and they do their job. They did seem heavy but I don't really have anything to compare them to. Getting in and out of them is super easy. Only fell once so far, which was my fault. When not riding clipped in, the platforms work great, without having any grip issues. It's definitely convenient to not be dedicated to one specific pedal on the bike. I commute, go on casual rides and use them for fitness and couldn't be happier with these.

            Comments about Shimano PD-A530 Pedals:

I purchased these pedals for a mid 80's Cinelli Super Corsa I am refurbishing and wanted clip in pedals on the avid long rides but wanted to cruise the neighborhood casual without issues. These pedals work great for both conditions. These pedals have the tension adjuster for the clips and the pedal shaft bearings. The bearings are a little on the tight side out of the box but break in pretty quick. Very impressed with these pedals for the price point.

First time using clip less. Was a bit nervous after reading about first timers falling. Installed them on a stationary bike first and practiced uncliping. So far no crashes. I felt the difference right away. Did a 33 mi ride today and noticed that I no longer have to shift my feet while peddling. My feet tended to shift while riding and was always having to correct my foot position. Now they don't

Gets a 5 star at discount price (expensive at msrp). Had another pair on the tandem for years and they are a pleasure; i.e. exactly what I needed with no compromize on either side. Purchased another for the commuter bike for the same reason ... and the new price.
