Spot Mayhem 29 5 Star Bike 2018

spot mayhem 5 star bike 2018

Controlled Mayhem

Mountain biking is equal parts control, precision, and calculated risk, as well as, mayhem. Going all out, faster and faster is the name of the game. If this sounds like you, Spot would like to introduce to you the new Mayhem 29” trail bike. The Mayhem is the sibling to Spot’s rowdy Rollik and looks to expanding Spot’s vision of giving riders more options for aggressive trail riding. The Mayhem 29 is a full carbon trail slayer that delivers 130mm of travel via Spot’s innovative Living Link suspension.

At the heart of the Spot Mayhem is Spot’s Living Link™ system that re-imagines and reinvents full-suspension technology to provide riders with multiple benefits over conventional systems. Spot accomplishes this by replacing the standard, maintenance-prone cartridge bearings with a highly-developed composite leaf spring. They pair it with a finely-tuned air shock, which works in conjunction with the leaf spring, to harness the advantages of both. The Living Link™ leaf spring is both laterally stiff and vertically dynamic, providing a progressive flex through its range of motion. The result is a leap forward in bike handling, pedaling efficiency, durability, longevity and pure fun.

A premium suspension system like Living Link™ needs to be on a frame of the highest caliber, so Spot integrated Oxeon TeXtreme™ into the flesh and bones of the Mayhem. Made in Sweden, Spot believes TeXtreme™ is the finest carbon fiber fabric in the bike industry. Oxeon TeXtreme™ fabric consists of tows that have been spread flat before weaving. This advanced processing makes the material stronger and lighter. The results are a carbon fiber that provides the best strength to weight ratio of any in the bike industry. Spot is so confident in their carbon that they offer a 5 year warranty on the Mayhem frame.

The geometry of the Mayhem also represents Spot’s modern philosophy regarding rider position. The bike’s progressive geometry centers the rider’s weight precisely between the front and rear axle--eliminating front-end lift and providing a balanced attack position for both climbs and descents. All sizes of Spot’s frames feature a low stand-over height that allows men and women with shorter inseams to find a perfect fit. To further accommodate riders of all sizes, Spot’s XL Mayhem frame features a chainstay length increase of 8mm over their Large model for the added stability that a taller rider with a higher center of gravity requires.

Spot decks out this 5 star build with a host of top notch components. Starting with SRAM’s elite XO1 Eagle drivetrain. You will enjoy the crisp, accurate shifts and plentiful 12-speed gear range that will have you charging the flats and easily spinning your way up the climbs. Fox Factory suspension graces the front and rear of the bike, delivering 130mm of plush travel, and external adjustments for rebound and compression. When it comes time to slow things down, SRAM Guide RSC brakes come through with predictable control, and power to stop you on a dime in any condition. Mavic wheels spin fast and smooth on sealed bearings, and allow for easy tubeless set up. The Fox dropper will come in handy to tackle steep chutes and technical terrain. Spot tops off this 5 star build with a cockpit by Race Face that is lightweight and strong, giving you what you need to keep you pointed in the desired direction.

The new Mayhem is an elegant engineering solution to meet the demands of modern trail riders. So throw a leg over one and go out and stir up a little Mayhem of your own

Trail bike handling that is Spot-on
Fun bike!

Handling feels fairly neutral. Felt more like a 27.5 bike than a 29r bike. It felt right at home on tight single track; more so than any of my previous 29rs anyway. I'm not sure if it is the ti leaf-spring style pivot or something else about the bike but the rear tire tracks REALLY well. Like the rear tire is being forced to stay in contact with the trail no mater what the terrain is like. This gives it great traction. Something else I noticed was a frame with very little lateral flex. Like a confidence inspiring lack of flex. Is that related to the leaf spring thing too? Not sure but regardless the bikes cornering and lean were easy to predict and work with even during rough uneven downhill. I set up the bike with about 30% sag for my first ride. After riding it I'm thinking 35% may work even better with this design so I'll tweak that and see what happens on my next ride. While it felt right at home on tight singletrack, it didn't feel twitchy or skittish on steeper stuff. No world cup DH or Rampage terrain but there are a couple rutted sections on Terry's Wall where I can get up to around 25 MPH and it took that in stride. Over all I could only find one negative on the first ride. The 34mm fork felt slightly flexy compared to the frame. Being a cookie away from 200 lbs, that may say more about me than the bike. Lighter riders may not notice, but a Pike or a 36 would feel better IMFAO. (In My Fat A** Opinion)

It came with tubes in and I was so excited to ride it I didn't set up tubeless. Handling should improve once I take out the tubes and add tubeless juice.

Overall I'm totally digging it! Can't wait to get out on it again after some tuning tweaks to see what else it can do.

My Favorite 29er I've ridden yet
Wow, this bike is amazing. I have always been a fan of Spot bikes and this was the first full suspension bike I rode from them. I’m a big fan of single pivot suspension systems on the decline and this bike feels exactly like one while having the pedal efficiency of a multi-linkage system. I’m 5’7” IN or 170.1 CM if you are into that kind of thing. The bike I was riding was a large frame and that was comfortable but, I would have been much more confident on a medium. That size would have made the bike more playful and nimble. The steep seat angle is a breath of fresh air. Climbs like a goat and doesn’t require too much English on the bike to keep it in a straight line. With the slack head angle this bike would even fair well on trails that require a little more travel. Overall if you are looking for a trail bike in 29” wheel look no further. Also, call the Gear Advisors, they will get you set up properly. Nice job Spot
