Its a cassette, not the type you put in an 80's style boom box or walkman, just a bicycle cassette. It's reasonably light, but will not perform miracles and make you god of the inclines. It does not pair well with white or red wine, however I have not tried it with a rosé and leaves you with a distinctive metallic taste and several chipped teeth if you try to eat it. I initially tried using it as a paper weight and found it superb, I don't know if it was the wide range (11-34!) or the carefully machined teeth, but it made absolutely darn sure that not a single paper flew off my desk, even at gale force winds!I installed it on the rear hub of my bike (I am sure you could fine an alternative place to install it, however your results may vary).Once installed I made some small adjustments to the shifters and pointed my bike towards the nearest trail. Of course nothing happened, since I was still in my living room, but the cassette looked really nice pointed in that direction, with the light coming in from the window and all. The next day I took it for a ride and found the cassette to be...underwhelming, there was no magical gear, nothing that made the ride easier, it just sat there and shifted, like nothing had changed, which to be honest, is exactly why I bought it. It is quite a bit lighter than my old cassette (which is now serving as an anchor for the USS Missouri) and shifting is still fine.

I'm a clyde at about 285 lbs. with gear and a 30 lb bike. I ride about 3 to 4x a week and I'm not overweight (I could lose 15 lbs) - just big. So, this review probably doesn't aply to most riders.
I upgraded to this cassette after I destoyed my last one. Figured this would be more durable, and well, I guess it was. I only bent this one a little bit whereas the previous one was like tin foil. My IRD casette (on a spare wheel) doesn't shift as well, but is far more durable. Guess I'm sticking with that.

            Careful, this thing eats hubs

            By Torque Boy

            from Utah

Comments about Sram PG-970 9 Speed MTB Cassette 2011:

Nice lite cassette, but there is so much play between gears that when heavy torque is applied it will "tear up" the engagement slots on an aluminum free hub body. Over time it will destroy the free hub to cassette interface. I would use only on steel free hub bodies.
