Comments about Sturmey-Archer Sturmey Archer S80 8Speed Hub:
Been fairly good - some gear skipping unless perfectly adjusted - more tweaking necessary than really should be, but hasn't yet broken and have done hundreds of heavy kilometres. One important trick - the wheel-mounted cable adjuster moves - so screw it right in so it can't go any further and then do the adjustment on the twist-shift, which seems to be more stable - and keep checking that little yellow indicator and white pointer registration mark on the back hub.One important thing - these hubs are not rated by the maker for off-road use, which I suspect would kill it pretty quickly as the loads imposed can be huge. Have tried it out and treated it as a single speed - lock it in one gear and leave it there. That said, it's put up with me for a while now - I weigh 100 kilos and have a tendency to stomp on the pedals and stand up and swing for acceleration when I'm riding to work: it hasn't self destructed....It looks better than the Shimano Nexus.....but I'd buy Shimano next time round for the sake of less ongoing fiddling: it's like owning an old English car!
Comments about Sturmey-Archer Sturmey Archer S80 8Speed Hub:
My overall experience with this hub has been VERY BAD. I have had 2 hubs fail one at 500 miles and the second at around 100. I will not be mounting a 3rd one.My list of issues with this hub:1. Odd gearing 1st is 1:1 and the rest are up from there making it difficult to get correct gearing my LBS didn't run a gear inch calculation before selling me the bike and I had to change the front chain ring to make the bike usable. I ended up running a 22t chain ring to a 25t rear sprocket which looks silly but its the only way I could find to get the gearing in a reasonable range. 2. Poor ShiftingWhen riding this hub easily it performed well but as soon as any significant torque was applied the performance deteriorated quickly. When shifting down in the range the hub shifted ok but when shifting up it revealed its true colors. It appeared to me that when ridden hard the gears tended to seat in place and not want to move up. Sturmey states that you should "stop pedaling" when shifting but even when you do stop it sometimes took several seconds for the hub to actually shift into gear. The problem is that it is impossible to know if the shift has happened or not. The kicker is that if you pedal between gears the hub is susceptible to damage. 3. Easily DamagedThe fact that I have destroyed 2 hubs in less than 600 miles would lead me to conclude that this hub is basically unusable. Buy and ride at your own risk.
