Surly Knard Folding Tire

Surly Knard Tire

The Surly Knard’s block tread pattern has been carefully researched, designed and tested. While it looks like a simple block pattern, the profile is shaped just slightly edgy to maximize traction on corners while keeping rolling resistance low on straightaways. The closely spaced blocks are designed to grab terrain, and the pattern works especially well when climbing, making it a great all-around tire. Please note that your frame must have adequate clearance to run this tire, it's a fatty!

  • Tire Type: Clincher
  • Tires with 27 TPI have a Steel Bead and are optimized for long life, 120 TPI tires are lighter, more supple, and have a folding bead.

Rips
This is a seriously underrated tire for the money. Many compare it to the Nano 40c- which is $16 more. The 120 tpi is plenty light and completely rips. I replaced my Barstow Passes with these because I wanted more grip, and they totally delivered. But they don't feel significantly slower or louder on the pavement.

One tip- do not expect to set these up tubeless. These have the loosest bead I've ever seen, and I gave up. Work great with slimed tubes though.

Great grippy goodness
My Pugsley came with Endomorph tires front & rear. I swapped the front for a Larry (see my review under the lightweight version) which was a huge improvement, and have now put the Knard on the rear. I'm using the bike on hardpack, rocky and loose singletrack - no snow or sand. Performance can be summed up in three words - grip, grip & grip. With this much grip, they should be called 'Kneasy' instead of Knard. Folding 120tpi version is about 500g lighter than my mate's 27tpi version of the Knard. Having cost about $250 for the set (Larry/Knard) it's been an expensive change-over, but the improvement in the handling and grip over the Endo tires has been worth every penny. Paying extra for the lightweight versions has saved close to 1 kg. All round, very happy - although I can't comment on how long they'll last just yet.

Awesome tire for summer riding
The knard has been awesome for variable forest service roads, great on pavement and awesome for singletrack. The tire rolls so well that I'm considering running 26" knards on my Pugsley in the summer.

Set up great tubeless
These have been my go to 3 season XC rubber for my beargrease with 70mm Whisky rims (set up tubeless).
The traction ridng on slickrock just can't be beat.
The diameter of these when inflated to 15-18 #s is nearly 27.5". With the trend of phasing out 26" mtb gear, I sure hope Surly continues to make these.
Riding the GDMBR, N-S this summer with this set up on my non-suspension fatty.

My bike has Knards!
Don't have many miles on them yet but they are working great so far. Went from some 35c commuter tires to these and the ride is much smoother now. They are a bit slower at 40psi than the commuter tires but once the ride gets rough these really shine.

is the 700x41c version tubeless compatible?
A shopper on Jul 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I dont think so. I read somewhere that they were, and set them up as tubeless. The whole time I had them they leaked sealant from the side walls and didn't stay inflated for long. Maybe the version I had wasn't tubeless.
What's the width distance necessary on frame to fit this tire?
Joel G on Jan 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I purchased the Big Fat Knard (4.8"). It's not 4.8" in width, but it is big compared to other tires at this claimed width. If I remember correctly, it is wider than the Surly Bud 4.8" at around 4.3-4" actual width. I tried to put it on the back of my Framed Alaskan Carbon bike, but the tread rubbed my chain in the lowest gear (I had a 2x drivetrain then), even though there was plenty of frame clearance. I put it on the front instead and loved it until on one very wet day I caught a lattice of diagonal roots on the lip of a jump and shot sideways over a hill and broke a few ribs. After that, I bought a 45NRTH Flowbeist. Still, for sandy, dry, or loamy conditions it is a great tire with tons of float and low rolling resistance.
is this a kevlar tread?
A shopper on Aug 30, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Kevlar bead, not tread. These have no additional puncture protection.
