The Long Haul Trucker is easily the best value touring frame/bike on the market. The complete bikes are a great deal, but if you prefer to choose all your own components, start with this bare frame. With the relaxed geometry needed to carry a load while retaining stability, plus a full complement of rack and fender braze-ons, the LHT can easily be built up into the ultimate touring, commuter, or errand bike.

This is one of the best frames ever for a touring set up. It would also make a great daily commuter bike. This frame can take a beating, very durable.

I built a touring bike on a 2008 Surly LHT frame that I bought from Jenson. What a joy it has been! The first summer out, I took it the whole length of the Katy Trail in Missouri. I've ridden it through the crazy streets of San Francisco. I put 2.2" tires on it and rode through the beach sands in Ocean City, Maryland.
It's not a fast bike. You won't be racing this thing. But it handles remarkably well even when you load it down. The steel frame takes out the road buzz and just lets you settle in.
At first I was a little unhappy with the 26" wheels. I wanted 700c so I could use racing tires. But the 26" wheels are so much stronger, AND you can use fat mountain bike tires no problem. So it can be used on just about any type of terrain. I keep two sets of wheels and switch them out depending on the tires I'm using and the terrain I'm riding on.
It's a little expensive, but honestly, it's the best touring frame on the market.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
