Great Crankset
Nicely designed product adaptable to many different set-ups. Converted a vintage MTB frame to single speed. Love the different spider options to put any BCD ring on. Highly recommended and would purchase again.

Excellent Workhorse Crankset
The Mr. Whirly crankset is still going strong after 4 years of abuse. Coupled with a Rohloff speedhub on a Big Dummy, this thing should last many more years. I do wish it came in a 170mm version for my short legs but I make do with the 175mm.

Straight, but just LOVE my Mr. Whirly SS Crankset!
I shopped around and decisively settled on my Surly Mr. Whirly SS Crankset for my 2012 Trek Sawyer (a fully rigid retro 29r). Although I'm a very mediocre (self trained and still learning) bike mechanic I had minimal difficulty installing Mr. Whirly and replacing the rear 10x cassette with a Surly SS Cog and spacers (Thanks to Surly's Simple Man Instructions). I must have done alright because I've been enjoying my ride ever since (well beyond 1000 miles), and have experienced no problems with Surly's outstanding components. If I had to downgrade this product in any area it would have to be the expense. But, when you consider the R&D, materials, manufacturing, workmanship, labor, distribution, shipping, handling, etc., I just can't go there (and no, it's not because money comes easy - it doesn't). It's just a great product and to me the value shines through all the muck involved in making and keeping a buck. As an added bonus (and most important bonus) the value also shines through all the trail dust, muck, etc., as evidenced by the shed eating grin on my face every time I turn the cranks. And, NO I don't work for Surly - they're thousands of my away, someplace back East.

Great crank, Terrible instructions.
The Crankset is Great,it runs smooth as silk. However the instructions appear to be from an older design crankset. There are parts on the exploded diagram that are not part of the newer crankset. Also do yourself a favor and fit the non drive side crank arm on the shaft loosely (it is keyed) and then the drive side crank arm and spacer on the shaft (it is not keyed).while the crank is not installed on the bike. Making sure the drive side crank arm is aligned 180 degrees from the non drive crank arm. The drive side crank arm is then tightened down on the crank shaft but not torqued yet.
Also Jenson recommends a 9 speed chain and the chain is too narrow for the chain ring. If you go to surly's web site it recommends an 8 speed chain which is wider, they also say a 9 speed chain might be tight and can be ridden in, but in my case the chain would not even go into the teeth on the chain ring.

PROS: Built Tough

CONS: Terrible Instructions
