Surly's Stainless Steel Chainrings are perfect for singlespeeds, fixed gears or riders simply wanting a stronger, stiffer, prettier chainring. Although they are slightly heavier than alloy chainrings, they are considerably more resilient to impact and will last over twice as long as alloy chainrings. Also, once worn in one direction, their symmetrical design allows them to be flipped for double the lifespan, making them more economical than alloy rings! These non-ramped, non-pinned chainrings have a beautiful stainless finish that will upgrade the class of any bike. These are compatible with most standard bolt circle diameter cranksets, and can be used just fine with multiple front ring setups, although shifting will be slightly slower than with a ramped chainring. These fantastic rings come in a variety of bolt patterns, teeth options, and BCD. Check the options menu for the chainring that will fit your application.

Features and Information

  • No ramps or shift gates
  • For use with 6-10 speed chains, 1/2"x3/32" pitch
  • Incredibly strong and durable!

Read the instructions, or rather the recommendations when it comes to chain compatability. Surly says:

Our 94bcd,104bcd and 110bcd x 34/35/36t chainrings are made with a 2.2-2.3mm thick stock plate and work best with 5-8 speed chains. Many folks are using these on 9 speed drivetrains but this can often results in a "tight fit" right out of the box (This will loosen up and shifting should improve after the chain breaks in). The 110bcd 38-50t and all 130bcd chainrings are machine finished to have a 2.1mm tooth thickness and thus work fine with 9spd chains.

I've never had any problems using these rings when used per Surly's recommendations. Very durable and oh so shiney... mmmmm.

Although it's supposed to fit a nine speed chain, it fits so tight that the chain is wearing excessively and causes undue friction. It's really only meant for an 8 speed chain. It CAN fit a 9, but it's not advised, in my opinion. I wasted 40 bucks on this because I had to order a Salsa to replace it.

Comments about Surly Stainless Steel Chainring:

I bought this chainring to put on my singlespeed. It was very easy to install and works great (as intended). It's made of stainless steel and therefore should be durable during my winter rides. My only wish was that it came in black. Another great Surly product!

Comments about Surly Stainless Steel Chainring:

I use this ring on my cyclocross bike.

I've had no issues racing it for two seasons with a 1x10 Sram Force setup.

The ring is definitely a bit wide and may contribute to premature chain wear, but I replace chains every season anyway (it gets very muddy here).

After thousands of miles, mud, sand and slush this thing still cleans up like new.

Used this on 1x9 drivetrain, dropping down 7 teeth on front, 40t to 33t. The change is not as radical as expected, but seems to be perfect for hilly seattle. Now I get rest time after finishing a steep hill using the easy gear.

Easy to insall and the high teeth keep the chain in check. I'm having no problems running a SRAM 951 chain. Maybe these other guys are mashers, learn to spin boyz!
