The Surly Troll defies logic and description. Is it a hardtail MTB? A commuter? A touring bike? A snow/sand bike? Well, yes. Surly designed it to be an incredibly versatile, 26" wheel mountain bike, but its unlike most mountain bikes youve seen...
For starters it has clearance for massive tires (2.7"), unheard of in a hardtail frame. The sloping toptube with gusset provides plenty of standover clearance, even with the big rubber or a 100mm/4" suspension fork fitted (a 4130 chromoly rigid matching fork is included with the frame).

- Full line guides for derailleur and brake housing
- Fender eyelets, rack mounts, and disc/rim brake mounts F+R (yes, you can use discs, fenders, and racks, all at the same time)
- Horizontal, rear-loading dropouts with a der. hanger allow you to run singlespeed or geared; offer a dedicated area for a Rohloff internally geared OEM2 hub axle, should you choose to use one, and threaded holes accept Surlys trailer mounting nuts
- To build it up, youll need a 27.2mm post, 1 1/8" threadless headset, 73mm BB, and 28.6 clamp style top pull front derailleur
- a special Surly caliper adapter is needed if you want to use a rear disc brake - it is included with the frame and handles up to a 6" rotor (most common size)

I bought this to be a multi-use bike. I wanted to do some mountain biking and off road touring but went with the Troll so that it could run as a commuter, too. It primarily stays in mtb mode. But I use it as my snow commuter when winter comes. Read the reviews. They're all correct. It'll do anything well. I ride it as a rigid mtb and love it. But I can throw a rack on it and ride it to work, no problem. It takes on anything I throw at it.

This is my workhorse/singletractor. I've raced it, bike camped with it and look forward to using it as my rig to get to cross country ski spots this winter. The Troll is so versitile; which is a double edged blade. It can do anything, but it makes you always think about doing something else with it, which can be $$$.
My gripe with the rear dropouts is that if you are running a derailleur/geared drivetrain, it can be a but of a hassle to remove the rear wheel. Not the end of the world.

If you are a builder that likes a frame with lots of options and isn't worried about weight then this is the frame for you. It's like others have said you can set it up anyway you want it and then some. I love this frameset so much I plan on buying another one.

If your bike needs do not fit into one of the industry molds, this frame may just be the ticket. You can pretty much built this frame up any way you like. Disk brakes, cantilever brakes, gears (derailleur, or rolloff), racks (front and rear), fenders, trailer, child seat and all at the same time if you wanted, or run it as a lean light single speed. Mine is set up with all Shimano XT components (9 speed and hydraulic brakes) , Jones loop bars, brooks B17 saddle, Tubus Duo, and Logo racks, SKS Bluemels fenders, Ortlieb front and rear roller panniers.
I feel like I have really missed out by not discovering Surly sooner. My only gripe is that like all other good bike frames, there is no dedicated kickstand mount. That kind of alienates customers like me, who live in crowded cities (Tokyo) where bike stand use is mandatory in public places. It's illegal to lean on anything or lay it down. We're left to have to jerry rig something on a bike that was disigned to do away with jerry rigging. But hey, they probably weren't thinking about Tokyo when they designed it.

It has become my utility bike when I need pull or carry something. Since it's the only bike I have with fenders it's also my goto bike in bad weather. It's a builders dream you set it up anyway you want and then change it around again.
