Get rid of that old pogo stick
Any older mountain bike converted for road use can be improved by tossing the suspension fork, especially if it was a cheap fork to start with.
In my case, the Surly fork was half the weight and with its IS disc caliper mount I could use a disc hub wheel and Avid mechanical disc kit I already had. There are also V-brake studs if you want to go that way. Surly 1x1 CroMoly solid forks come in two lengths to replace 80mm or 100mm travel suspension forks. Just measure the axle to crown distance of your old fork at rest and if one of the Surly forks is within 20 or 30mm +- you will not notice much different in the handling. I also used a Surly fork when electrifying another MTB frame using a front hub motor. Many suspension fork legs will foul a motorised hub and motor manufacturers often don't recommend fitting them to aluminium front dropouts. The Surly fork seems made for the job.

Excellent replacement
I bought this to replace a cheesy Suntour suspension fork on my Giant Roam XR2. I was worried because I had to have it shipped to China, so it really needed to fit well. I was really very happy. The new fork did not change the geometry of the Roam at all, and the weight savings was significant over the old suspension fork. Now I just need the Surly racks and this bike will be ready to tour.

love it
This fork replaced the suntour xcm that came on my bike. The surly is almost 3 pounds lighter than the pogo stick it replaced. I only use this bike for chumming and don't miss the suspension at all. No more lost power when hammering to the grocery store!

exactly like it says
used on an On One Inbred 26" converted to a grocery-getter. on that frame it provides easy, intuitive steering without being too lazy or too twitchy. Excellent commuter fork. Weighs what a steel fork weighs, costs what a steel fork costs. Has only one pin receiver for rim brakes so adjustability is limited, but my front brake works fine as is.

incorrect photo
beware THE PHOTO IS WRONG
when I bought this, the photo shown was actually a 1x1 80mm fork
with curved blades and the leg was uniform in diameter.
But the one I actually got was with straight and tapered fork leg, which reduces stiffness significantly.
The CS told me that it was the actual design for a 1x1 100mm fork. They offered me an option to return but unfortunately I live outside the us and have already paid the shipping and import tax.

PROS: Finish, Attractive Design, Durable

CONS: Heavy
