Intelligent design which includes being able to better align the cog with the chain line depending upon which side you have facing outward. Longer teeth help to minimize the incidence of slippage and maximize chain wrap. Larger sizes have been drilled (see picture) to reduce weight penalty. Mating surface of cog to free hub has a wider contact patch thus reducing the potential of shearing and damaging your free hub.

I bought this to get a faster ratio than my previous setup, but I ended up with a lot of chain skipping when accelerating to climbing hills. I tried two other chains (both brand new), and tried a new tensioner. No change. The chain rollers like to ride up over the teeth on the sprocket, even with 180 degrees of chain wrap on the sprocket.

Switching to an Endless rear sprocket solved the chain skip problem completely. Same chain, same tension, same amount of chain wrap, just no more skipping. I'm done with Surly sprockets.

great single speed cog. the 22t gives a great climbing gear combined with a 33t chainring.

people can say it's heavy, but 20g really doesn't make a big difference...

I was using this on my SS 29er but wanted to try some different gearings out. I bought a cheap multi-cog kit from here for the same price as this one cog. my legs can't tell the difference between the cheap ones and this one.

Comments about Surly Single Speed Cog:

The Surly cog is a great buy, it has a nice wide body that won't tear up your freehub and it fits well.

This does not come with a Singlespeed conversion kit, it is just the cog. If you are just converting be sure that you grab another pack that includes the full conversion kit with spacers and lock ring.

Bike I built came with a cheesy stamped cog and also wanted a little more gear. So went with this stout surly cog in a 21t to fit my needs. Excellent fit, not many miles on it yet but based on other reviews and surlys rep. Im sure it will hold up great!
