Surly Stainless Steel Chainring

Surly Stainless Steel Chainring

Surly's Stainless Steel Chainrings are perfect for singlespeeds, fixed gears or riders simply wanting a stronger, stiffer, prettier chainring. Although they are slightly heavier than alloy chainrings, they are considerably more resilient to impact and will last over twice as long as alloy chainrings. Also, once worn in one direction, their symmetrical design allows them to be flipped for double the lifespan, making them more economical than alloy rings! These non-ramped, non-pinned chainrings have a beautiful stainless finish that will upgrade the class of any bike. These are compatible with most standard bolt circle diameter cranksets, and can be used just fine with multiple front ring setups, although shifting will be slightly slower than with a ramped chainring. These fantastic rings come in a variety of bolt patterns, teeth options, and BCD. Check the options menu for the chainring that will fit your application.

Features and Information

  • Incredibly strong and durable!

Read the instructions, or rather the recommendations when it comes to chain compatability. Surly says:

Our 94bcd,104bcd and 110bcd x 34/35/36t chainrings are made with a 2.2-2.3mm thick stock plate and work best with 5-8 speed chains. Many folks are using these on 9 speed drivetrains but this can often results in a "tight fit" right out of the box (This will loosen up and shifting should improve after the chain breaks in). The 110bcd 38-50t and all 130bcd chainrings are machine finished to have a 2.1mm tooth thickness and thus work fine with 9spd chains.

I've never had any problems using these rings when used per Surly's recommendations. Very durable and oh so shiney... mmmmm.

The chain ring folded under pedal power. Very surprising.

Comments about Surly Stainless Steel Chainring:

this is my second surly chain ring. When ever I buy a bike the first thing i do is take of the stock aluminum chain rings off and put the surly on. They take a beating and seem to never wear out. My first one I bought about 6-7 years ago and I know it had thousands of miles on it. Still going strong. Just bought this for my new bike I converted to SS. I know Ill have many miles of worry free cranking.

I have this chainring on two bikes. As long as you pay attention to what Surly says about the break in period on a ten speed it works very well on a 1 x 10 set-up.

Comments about Surly Stainless Steel Chainring:

Easy to fit, paired up with a 20 stainless inner-ring. I found no significant difference in shifting.
The inner ring takes more force and wears, the middle ring gets the most use so I've gone stainless.
In some countries separate chainrings are had to find so I want mine to last. I am also hoping that there will be less risk of the rings getting bent if the cain comes off and gets jammed between the rings and frame,

I did two rides on this before it made contact with a rock and ended its usable life. No loose chainring bolts, no undue impact. One tap and it folded over between spider arms like a wet noodle. I've ridden many other ss and 1x rings with and without bashgaurds and this is the first problem I've ever had.

Purchased 33T, which installed easily and performs perfect on my 1X8 MTB. Shiny stainless surface, mirrors the finish of the rear cassette gears. Tough enough, and too nice looking, to be hiding behind a bash ring. Weighs a little more than aluminum counterparts, but like durability and finish better.

Comments about Surly Stainless Steel Chainring:

I'm very pleased that I used this chainring as part of my drivetrain upgrade. I now run my '86 Stumpjumper as 1x9, with this 44t ring up front, and Shimano XT throughout the rest. With my former ring, I needed a little plastic "finger" mounted low on my seat tube next to the chainring to keep the chain from throwing off, but I decided to take it off when I got this. I threw the chain off once when things were first breaking in (first 20 miles), but no incidents in the 300 miles since. All is running smooth and solid.

Had too many problems with an aluminum chainwheel, chain kept falling off and I found that the stress on my single speed was just too much for it.
The steel chainwheel is durable - and the minimal extra wheight is acceptible for me.
