We can all agree that stems aren't the most exciting new part to purchase. So why spend the extra clams on a new one? Other than allowing you to fine tune the fit of your rig, look at upgrading your stem as a golden opportunity to not only shave some weight, but also to stiffen your front end for better control.
3D forged from an advanced 7050 alloy, the XR 1.5 stem is designed with a low stack height and a negative rise for aggressive mountain bikers looking to lower their handlebar position. This resilient aluminum construct achieves the perfect balance of strength, stiffness and a low weight, while the wide four-bolt face plate design better distributes stress and lowers the clamping force required to secure the handlebar. Whether you're an all-in XC racer or a rowdy trailteer, the XR 1.5's sturdy design could be your missing link.
I was in need of a stem with a short stack height due to a previously cut steerer tube on my fork. This one did the trick perfectly. I was a little concerned about the 10 degree drop, but once on my bike, it was the perfect angle and exactly what I was looking for. The only thing that threw me off a little was the bolts are T25 torx heads as opposed to hex heads. Not a big deal, but my multi tool I sometimes carry when I ride does not have any torx ends. Just something to consider.
The 90mm, -2° was perfect for my build due to the head tube angle. The weight came in at 144.4 grams for this size. It appears that both parts are castings which have been powder coated. This paint appears to be quite resistant to scratches.
I was unhappy with the choice of Torx screws as the nickel plating flaked off in several areas. I would have preferred unplated stainless steel screws.
I would recommend this stem for cross country riders.
My 70mm, -10 degree stem weighed in at 141 grams, which isn't particularly light. I suspect that might be due to the lack of machining at the steer tube and handlebar clamp areas. But so far so good, the stem is doing its job. Note: This stem uses T25 bolts exclusively. Also, the matte finish feels a bit rougher (like sandpaper) than I'd prefer.
