TRP Spyre Road/Cx Mechanical Disc Brake

TRP Spyre Road/Cx Mechanical Disc Brake

A rare animal this is. A mechanical brake with Dual piston actuation. Most mechanical disc brakes only actuate one piston and cram a rotor into the opposing stationary pad. The TRP Spyre ups the performance level and moves both pads simultaneously for even and precise braking. In addition to performance these brakes have the advantage of being extremely easy to set up. One barrel adjuster gets you dialed in and braking like a champ.

Features:

  • Convert any Road/Cross cable lever to a powerful mechanical disc brake system
  • Compressionless housing is HIGHLY recommended
  • Two opposing pistons engage the rotor evenly from both sides
  • Aluminum actuation arm and forged aluminum caliper body
  • Kit includes twin piston caliper, (2) 51mm adapters (both front and rear), and barrel adjuster

Specifications:

  • Mount to Front or Rear
  • Caliper: 74mm/51mm
  • Color: black/silver
  • Weight: 134g

Light and strong.
I wanted a mechanical brake rather than a juice brake for reasons of weight, simplicity and maintenance. These brakes are absolutely perfect. They are strong and easy to modulate. And if one gets caught out in the rain, they will work much better than traditional brakes. If you get a 160 rotor on the front (preferred) make sure you get a TRP adaptor/spacer.

surprisingly good
My bike came with the standard version of these a I felt I was packing in braking power. A friend recommended trying the dual actuation version. I would have to say that as far as cable actuated brakes go the are the best I've ridden. They're not as good as hydro brakes but the ease of maintenance and adjustability on the fly make up for it.

TRP Spyre
The Spyre sold by Jenson is a flat mount type. It does not fit older-style post mounts. I had to return mine to Jenson and they did a fine job of refunding my money.
I bought a post mount version from another company and it is way better than an Avid BB7 road caliper. It doesn't require as much cable travel to actuate the brake. I am using cross levers, though. My Ultegra 10-spd levers did not have enough cable pull even though websites state that they do.
I am giving these 4 stars, not 5 because hydraulic disk brakes supremely kick butt on cable-actuated brakes. If you can afford a hydraulic setup, do that.

Just to clarify, this is a pair of calipers (front and back), or is it just a single caliper in this kit?
A shopper on Feb 24, 2017
BEST ANSWER: It's a single caliper. There are different adapters to attach it to either the front or rear.
This brake will fit on a flat mount frame?
pbrun2 on Jan 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: One can buy an adapter to fit the brake to any frame. I had to shop around a little bit, but found what I needed pretty easily. I love the fact that both pads move inward so there is less friction when not using the brakes. And they have all the power you need, even when going down hill and getting them wet. I also like the fact that there is no need to fuss with bleeding brakes nor the risk of air bubbles in the hydraulic line. These are very simple. I like simple.
