Teravail Sparwood 29” Tire

The Great Divide Route Tire

For some, Sparwood is a small coal mining town in British Columbia used as a convenient stopping point on day one of the Tour Divide. For others, like Jay Petervary who is a well-seasoned veteran of the route, Sparwood is the essential resupply pit-stop he will use before pedaling on into the remote Flathead Valley. The Teravail Sparwood 29” tire is aptly named since it was literally designed for the Great Divide Route and the type of riding it demands. At 2.2 inches wide, it strikes the perfect balance between, volume, traction and rolling efficiency. Sidewalls and tread are incredibly reliable and perfectly suited for getting you and a loaded bike from Canada to Mexico. There is plenty to stress over while you're out there, don’t make tires one of them.

Features:

  • Tubeless-compatible for traction and comfort
  • Intentional tread design for maximum traction, rolling resistance and puncture protection
  • Additional in-casing flat protection

Testimonial

Jay Petervary, Ultra Endurance Cyclist, 2nd Place Finisher, 2015 Tour Divide

"The Teravail Sparwood tires were an excellent choice for this year’s Tour Divide. The wear of the tire is amazing. I used the same pair from start to finish, without a single flat! There were no signs of sidewall abuse either. The volume of the tire yields great comfort, especially on a loaded bike, and the performance on the road surfaces was fast on the straights, predictable, and trustworthy in the corners. It's a solid choice for anyone thinking of the Tour Divide."

Teravail Sparwood 29" Tire
The Sparwood caught my eye as the tread pattern is similar to a tire I use on my CX bike for mixed terrain use. The main intended use was for bikepacking with my Salsa Fargo, setup tubeless, on dirt, gravel and pavement. One of the two tires ordered disappointedly had a sidewall defect, allowing air to blow through. Hopefully this was is just a minor hiccup in the company's product because otherwise the tire performs very well on varied surfaces. Initially the tire surface is extremely tacky, grabbing and flinging small debris up on the frame but after 8-10 miles of crushed gravel use this dissipated. I choose the 120 TPI and setup tubeless gives a very nice ride, absorbing small shocks nicely at 35 psi.

PROS: Attractive Design

CONS: Heavy

Nice tire, unless you want it tubeless
My sidewall leaked from day one. Several months, and two more tubes of Stans later, and it goes completely flat everyday. I contacted Jenson, and was told that it is hard to get a tire warranted. So I guess I am stuck with it.

Nice tire for dirt and gravel, not for single track
I put some hundreds of miles in gravel, dirt, and pavement, and it is great tire. I took it to a single track, rode more aggressively, and it slipped in a curve with leaves and crashed.
