Comments about The North Face Men's LWH Jacket:
There's a saying with cycling clothing (or clothing in general): you get what you pay for. This jacket straddles the line between an expensive high-performance garment and an affordable option for cyclists. For years I've struggled to find an affordable option for a winter cycling jacket and this might just be the ticket, finally.
I bought this jacket because of the fit. I'm obsessive about fit. Most people my size (5'11" Male, 170lb, 40" chest) would wear a medium, but I generally opt for a slim fit for cycling clothing (hate baggy clothing in general). I purchased a small for a slim fit and it fits quite well. The sleeves are just PERFECT, shaped for the riding position, close-fit through the arm to minimize flapping, and most importantly, long enough to stay down while riding. The fit through the torso is slim but not tight. Riders looking for a perfectly aero skintight race rain jacket should look elsewhere, but this is slim enough for me... and I like it slim.
The rear hem is dropped a bit for optimum coverage. The jacket is made of a slightly stretchy water-resistant material (hard to describe the texture exactly) with a breathable liner (not mesh, thankfully). It will block road spray and wind, but I haven't tested it in all-out rain. The material is very comfortable and breathable. I don't think it would work great in the rain due to the seams for the zippered sleeves, but for rides where you think it MIGHT rain it's probably perfectly serviceable, just definitely more windproof than waterproof. The material is VERY comfortable, doesn't crinkle and make noise like nylon does. The collar is just high enough to cover the neck closely up to the helmet straps and not interfere with the buckle. There are minimal reflective accents on the front and backside, looks very classy. The rear pocket is quiet, and zippered. The sleeves zipper off to turn this jacket into a nice looking vest if you get too hot. To top it all off, the zippers work smoothly, are high quality and the jacket is lightweight. Very nice.
This jacket is perfect for someone who layers extensively for optimum performance while riding. I like the versatility of this jacket because it can be worn as a road, MTB or casual jacket as well (doesn't look overly sporty). It has performed admirably, and I've even crashed it in the dirt already with no damage to the jacket.
Great alternative to a $300-400 Rapha jacket.
