Thomson Elite Dropper Seatpost

Thomson components are known for their impeccable quality, attention to detail, and overall strength. No stranger to the all-mountain trail bike, it was only logical that Thomson would branch into the dropper seatpost market. The one piece forged inner post is strong and reliable as there aren’t any joints to loosen or fail. Their cartridge based system is designed to have the longest service life in the industry. Actuation is by cam so rider gets smooth, variable speed and height without resorting to a complicated, damage prone hydraulic actuator. The best part is while your buddies are bleeding their posts, you’ll be on the trails. There is no bleeding required for the Elite dropper seatpost. So, you can finally put your Thomson seatpost back on your trail bike now.

Comments about Thomson Elite Dropper Seatpost:

Very nice post, typical Thomson quality. I tried a KS Lev and a Gravity Dropper before Thomson finally got their 27.2mm dropper on the market. The KS was unreliable and performed poorly in comparison to the Thomson, and while it works and is reliable, the Gravity Dropper is crude and ugly. The only obvious drawback compared to the KS and GD is the cable routing, although I understand that it is simpler and more reliable to route it to the top. This is one of the things that failed in the KS, it requires a somewhat gimmicky and fragile mechanism to get the cable to the base of the post. The Thomson returns at the perfect speed and is smooooth and precise. The seat clamp is normal Thomson excellent. If I dig for things to criticize, the release lever could stand for some improvement, it could be less small and squared off and more ergonomic. And the cable guide makes a zippping noise as the cable housing slides through it, it is subtle but it takes away from the otherwise sweet impression of perfect smoothness.

Comments about Thomson Elite Dropper Seatpost:

After 10 months of use I have found this post to be no more reliable than others. It required warranty service after 4 months, now after another 6 months of use it requires warranty service again but Thomson has refused to issue an RMA for warranty service, despite being well within the two year warranty.

As for features, it comes with no noodle and the fastner for the handlebar clamp is of poor quality, I had to replace it with a fastener from HomeDepot. When installing, the cable must make a sharp bend at the seat post head. The design is difficult to set up and prone to cable slack, which can not be remidied because a tension adjuster is not provided either.

After 10 months of use the seat twists about as much as other dropper posts. Another annoyance is the collar at the top of the black portion keeps loosening. I tighten it by hand weekly but it will be an interesting event if it ever unthreads completely. Worst of all, it does not work anymore and Thomson will not fix it.

Comments about Thomson Elite Dropper Seatpost:

I have used this seat post twice and I am hooked on dropper seat posts. I love the control it gives you and ease of use. The Thompson looks and feels durable and I have used their seat posts for years, but I had a few unexpected issues. The biggest issue was the cable lock nut kept letting the cable slip. I fixed this issue by getting a better screw and forcing it in deeper(see image). No issue after that so it appears to be improper machining from the factory. Also the Cable housing supplied is not only on the heavy side, but extremely short(see picture). I will definitely have to get a longer cable. I also wish the lever effort to drop the seat was a little lighter, more like effort I use on my XTR derailleur shifter lever. At this price, everything should be near perfect. I called their customer service number, but have yet to hear back from them. For now, I will keep it even with it's minor peccadillos.

Comments about Thomson Elite Dropper Seatpost:

this thing is flawless like their other items. I have an elite x4 stem and had the standard post before this one. Perfection with out a doubt. But I can't believe they sent the thing out with such a short cable. Come on Thomson..... Still get it, you'll love it.
