The design team for the new Thomson 31.8 stems had a tough goal: make a stem better than the Thomson Elite Road and Mountain Stems. That was a tall order, given the popularity of the Elite models. They’ve done it, though - the new X4 is stronger AND lighter than before. It’s designed around the 31.8mm bar standard for increased stiffness and strength. The X4 incorporates a new steerer clamp design that shaves 20 grams, and of course, the beautiful design and machine work that have made Thomson famous, with a knee-friendly clamp and no welds to break. OK for use with carbon bars (always follow the mfrs. torque specs).

I love this stem but found the fasteners had a very shallow head when torquing them my bit kept wanting to work out only thing keeping this from being perfect.

This stem completes my mtb trio with the elite seatpost and black seatpost collar to match. This stem is lighter in hand than it looks, shows the usual fine machining Thomson is known for (just look how thin the front plate gets). Felt great at each point during the installation. And, in the end it has a slick, aircraft-precision feel to it.

I purchased the 50mm with zero rise. Much beefier and stronger than the stock stem on my Giant. The small allen bolts are to achieve the correct torque for the stem, not allowing for over tightening on the bars and the steering tube. Also, steering tube should go through top of the stem 2mm-3mm for correct torque on the top bolt. (run a 5mm spacer and then top cap on the top of the stem) Info posted on Thomson's website (blog). Great product and cutomer service from Thomson!

I put this on my MTB. Great Stem looks and feels strong, easy to adjust. One isse is that the bolts look small and use 4mm allen key. Based on teh size of the stem and in keep ing with other stems I would have prefered 5 mm allen key and slightly larger bolts. However no issue so far.

I have one (70 mm) on my all-mountain bike and another (50 mm, sturdier design) on my freeride bike.They really are set and forget pieces of hardware.Stiff, light, beautiful finish.
They could do with slightly bigger bolts just for the piece of mind though.Never had any problems with them but someone hamfisted enough could probably strip the threads.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought the X4 70mm stem. The stem is strong and grips the steer tube and handlebar securely. Thomson also sells blue dress up kit for this stem. Adds a nice bling to your bike.
