Thomson Elite X4 Stem

The design team for the new Thomson 31.8 stems had a tough goal: make a stem better than the Thomson Elite Road and Mountain Stems. That was a tall order, given the popularity of the Elite models. They’ve done it, though - the new X4 is stronger AND lighter than before. It’s designed around the 31.8mm bar standard for increased stiffness and strength. The X4 incorporates a new steerer clamp design that shaves 20 grams, and of course, the beautiful design and machine work that have made Thomson famous, with a knee-friendly clamp and no welds to break. OK for use with carbon bars (always follow the mfrs. torque specs).
  • 90 degrees (0 degree rise), 100 degree (10 degree rise)
  • Weight: 166g (100mm)
  • 7000-series aluminum
  • Steerer clamp: 1 1/8
  • Stack Height: 40mm
  • Bar Clamp: 31.8mm

As good as expected
I have been using the X4 for about 4 years now and I am still on the same one. It still looks and feels great. The finish is nice and clean. Thomson is like Chris King...you get what you pay for.

It's a Thomson - say not more
I was already running one of these but wanted to go a little shorter (with wider bars). The X4's are stiff, lightweight and beautifully made.

excellent quality and nice looks
I put this on my MTB. Great Stem looks and feels strong, easy to adjust. One isse is that the bolts look small and use 4mm allen key. Based on teh size of the stem and in keep ing with other stems I would have prefered 5 mm allen key and slightly larger bolts. However no issue so far.

Can't beat this classic
Thomson has a reputation for excellence, so this review will not be a shock to you. Just another satisifed customer who likes the flawless function of the X4 stem. There are other stems that maybe look a bit cooler but this has passed the test of time for me.

Top Notch Quality
Thomson components are a work of art. I have added a Thomson stem to several different bikes over the years and have been completely satisfied with the quality and performance of them all. I picked up the 80mm with 10 degree rise for my Karate Monkey. This helped to give me a more upright positioning for more comfort on long rides. Cant beat the way these stems look.

set and forget
I have one (70 mm) on my all-mountain bike and another (50 mm, sturdier design) on my freeride bike. They really are set and forget pieces of hardware.Stiff, light, beautiful finish.
They could do with slightly bigger bolts just for the piece of mind though.Never had any problems with them but someone hamfisted enough could probably strip the threads.

PROS: Looks, Light, Stiff

CONS: Smallish bolts, Price

Could be better
I love this stem but found the fasteners had a very shallow head when torquing them my bit kept wanting to work out only thing keeping this from being perfect.

Rock solid
Was running a Ritchey stem with King headset and Niner carbon rigid fork. Had consistent problems with stem loosening on the carbon fork resulting in loose headset. Changed out to the Thompson and haven't had to tighten it since...

Which "Thomson" graphic appears on the side of this stem? Jenson's two photos show two different designs. If it varies by length I am wondering about the 110mm version. Thanks!
Max on Apr 3, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The large, singular "THOMSON" logo is on the 0 degree stems only. If it is a +/-10 degree rise, it will have two smaller, flippable Thomson logos on the side of the stem.
