When it comes to helmets there used to be only two choices. We could choose the all-out full face moto type or go with something of the swiss cheese roadie persuasion. Thank goodness folks like Troy Lee Designs stepped in and started meeting us in the middle with helmet styles like the A1. These are full coverage helmets that suit the needs of a more modern trail and all-mountain rider. They continue to perfect the fit and style of this light weight lid which features a polycarbonate shell, extra coverage at the temples and lower cranium area, tons of ventilation, a 1 piece Coolmax comfort liner, and customizable fit with a three-position stabilizer basket.
Troy Lee Designs A1 MIPS helmet is equipped with the patented MIPS system to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. Where most helmets are tested for vertical impacts, studies have shown that the human brain is more sensitive to oblique impacts. MIPS technology mimics nature's own method of reducing forces transferred to the brain in the event of a crash. When subjected to an oblique impact, a membrane between the brain the skull allows the brain to slide along the inner surface of the skull, which ultimately reduces the forces transferred to the brain. MIPS helmets use a low friction layer between the shell and liner to mimic this process, which significantly reducing the forces transferred to the brain.
So, the helmet fits and feels great, I will give it that. Just really bad design choices throughout though.
There are 3 tiny cheap plastic screws that hold the visor in place. One of them rattled loose pretty early in ownership on one of my rides, so now the visor slowly slides down during the course of my ride and I have to make sure the other two are tightened so they don't fall out on every ride. If you get this helmet, locktite that visor in place, because it sucks.
The sweat / padding insert is held in place by tiny pieces of velcro that are superglued into the helmet. They have almost all come loose at some point. Those also started detaching after just a few rides.
The padding directly dead front and center is the worst part about this helmet though. It's like all sweat in the helmet channels towards the front center instead of away from it.
Literally on every single ride, at some point, I will hit a bump or start going fast and all sorts of swear pours out all over my faces and glasses. Then I have to stop and wipe off my glasses. Imagine having to do this 6-8 times per 3 hour ride or so. I have even crashed a couple times because of this problem where suddenly a ton of sweat pours over my glasses in a fast / technical section basically blinding me.
Helmets should be adding safety, not taking away from it. Not much Troy Lee can do, it's not like I want them to send me another helmet of theirs, and I can't get my money back now.
