I turned 50 a few months ago and still enjoy riding challenging trails, especially now that I have a new Yeti SB-66. My wife and riding partners have been concerned I'm going to get hurt since I'm the most aggressive descender in my group. So I decided to look into some protection. I checked out SixSixOne, Fox, etc. but found them to be bulky and restrictive. I wanted something that would allow me to be able to ride up as well as down the trail. My LBS recommended Troy Lee Designs. The KG5450 appears to be just what I was looking for. They provide good protection without being bulky. They are slim and slip on easily. So far I am very happy with my choice.

I have used these products for 2 seasons and i am looking to buy something different. I was stocked and excited about them when i got them but after using them and wrecking i would dissagree.
Riding Down Hill and free ride i am always finding myself pulling them back into place. XC and light riding they seem to do ok. I have found they take the impact great but if you slide much on them they tend to slide right off leaving no protection. I also think the shin guard and fore arm pad are on the short side.
I think my biggest problem with them is putting them on and taking them off. I like to wear pants for DH and Freeride and i either have to take my pants off to put them on or try to roll my pant legs up high enough to get them on and try to get my pants back over them. You can not wear them on the out side very well at all. When putting them on and off you have to be carefull where you pull on them or they will rip.
They fit awesome and you cant even tell they are there. So i think i will give these to my wife wich she likes them alot, they work great for her riding.

Comments about Troy Lee Designs KG5450 Knee/Shin Guard:

First off they look excellent and feel excellent. Like some others mentioned you cant "Brute strength" them on as they seem to stretch a bit. As long as you take care putting them on you have one great knee/shin combo. This was the only reason they get 4 and not five stars. I would definitely buy them again, and I am very pleased with them indeed.

As for fit i do have quite large thighs BUT i did take the advice on these reviews and went for a medium and they fit real well. I am by no means overweight, 5,10 195 pounds. The mediums fit perfect. Defo go a size down!

I really like these knee pads. They are lightweight and breathable. They flex with your legs well and are comfortable enough to wear even on hot days (compared to some other pads I've worn)

I use these for DH biking. They are comfortable and good looking but run large. I am 6' 195lbs and had to return the large for a med. Only con is that the stitching wants to rip when pulling them on.

First time I crashed with them the shin pad put a 4in cut in my shin. I was not going fast just had the front tire wash out after a 1.5ft drop in to an off camber section.

Comments about Troy Lee Designs KG5450 Knee/Shin Guard:

These pads are very light, and they cover just enough for a knee/shin protector. They cover only the top part of your shin, and that's the part that my pedal strikes my leg the most when I slip off the bike.

As for fall protection, I have yet to really find out ho well they work, but by feeling the material and ample padding they have, I'm not too worried about how well I'll be protected, but I might be a little worried about the way the pad looks after a crash since the fabric is on the exterior with no hard shell to protect it.

Fitting is a little big, so go one size smaller than on the sizing chart.

When pulling them on, they sounded like they started to rip, so make sure you grap the lower portion wehn putting them on, not the top loop. Super comfortable, I usually put them on at the top of the hill and then leave them on the rest of the ride. Been using them for 5 months now with no issues.

I'm sort of happy with these. I'd been falling a lot, and wanted some extra protection, but I don't wear them on every ride. I could though. They're not terribly hot, so you can get away with them on warm days if you want.

I have fallen a couple times with them on, but ended up with bruises under the pretty small shin pad bit. There's no side padding.

It took me a little while to figure out positioning, and I was riding with them too high. I pushed them down a touch, and it was much more comfortable.

I kind of wish I could go back and spring for the POC pads, and I definitely wish I could take them off and on without taking off my shoes.

I always wear this when riding. Material is very breathable especially here in our hot weather (Las Vegas, NV).

Knee cups stay in place even in long periods of pedalling. Most of the time you forget it's there until its time to take it off.

Just follow the size chart and you're good to go!
