Shimano WH-9000 Carbon Clincher Wheelset

Shimano WH-9000 Carbon Clincher Wheelset

The Dura-Ace name demands reverence. The hard-earned kind, that sort that is kindled in the heat of the Peloton as the world's greatest riders snake their way up punishing mountain passes, attack switchback descents with unmatched speed and precision, and hammer it out in the flats with a strength harnessed by few and envied by many. Dura-Ace is the pinnacle of the Shimano road line, and it's no wonder that it's right at home in the stables of multiple pro-tour teams.

The WH-9000 Carbon Clincher Wheelset represents all that victories are made of. From the smooth running Dura-Ace 9000 hubs to the impeccable D2 rims, The Shimano WH-9000 wheels offer an unparalleled level of performance that surpasses the demands of even the most scrutinizing cyclist.

The Dura-Ace WH-9000 wheelset is available in three distinct rim depths that allow you to tailor your wheel choice according to your riding style. The 24mm version is Shimano's ultralight race option and is purpose-built for efficiency when climbing and all- around stellar lightweight performance sure to please the weight weenies in the crowd. The 35mm is a practical middle ground between the 24mm and 50mm and takes on some of the best characteristics of each. Offering better aerodynamics than the 24mm, yet less weight than the 50mm, the 35mm is a great choice for rides that demand agility in the climbs and aero power in the descents and straightaways. Speed junkies should look to the 50mm to get their fix of blazing aero goodness. The 50mm's deep aero profile is built for speed and helps you cut through the pack with surgical precision.

Shimano's lust-worthy 9000 series hubs boast a buttery smooth spin quality based on Shimano's cup and cone design. The cup and cone ball-bearing design is easy to maintain and offers some the best road hub performance around. Shimano revised the seals for this generation of the Dura-Ace hub, improving performance and increasing durability, so you won't need to worry about your wheels acting up mid race and can focus on the task at hand—destroying the competition. Naturally, Dura-Ace 9000 hubs are 11 speed compatible out of the box and play friendly with the latest in Shimano drivetrain technology, further ensuring you're riding the best the industry has to offer and maximizing your performance potential. 10 speed cassettes are also compatible with optional freehub spacer. Dura-Ace freehub bodies feature 100% titanium construction that boasts long term durability and weight savings.

Another unique feature of the WH-9000 wheelset is Shimano's OptiBal rear spoke lacing. Both the C35 and C50 version get the OptiBal treatment, while the C24 remains radial laced. OptiBal features two spokes on the right side for every one spoke on the left. 21 spokes (14 drive side, 7 non-drive), work to even out tension between the left and right side of the rear wheel. On traditional road wheels, spoke tension on the non-drive side is significantly lower than the drive side and much tension is needed on the drive side to keep the wheel balanced. This formula can lead to spoke breakage on the non-drive side. OptiBal seeks to correct this imbalance and produces a better ride feel, better wheel tension, and optimal stiffness.

Last, but definitely not least is the D2 rim. Shimano widened the rim to 23mm and deepened the tire bed on this most recent version of the Dura Ace 9000 wheel. The wider rim profile optimizes performance and decreases rolling resistance, especially when using wider road tires in the 25-27c range. Shimano chose to incorporate an aluminum brake surface to maximize braking potential on the WH-9000 series. The small bump in weight gained from the aluminum brake track is nothing to break a sweat about, the trade-off for superior braking performance offered by these rims is well-worth it. With the Dura Ace 9000 wheels, you'll be more confident in downhills, braking less and more predictably, and ultimately maximizing your overall efficiency. The D2 rim has been given a new improved aero profile in the 35mm and 50mm version to help negate the effects of crosswinds and keep your rolling straight toward the finish line.

C-24, Great For Light Riders
These are top of the line wheels. The rims are beautiful. The hubs are silky smooth. Out of the box they were true, round, and properly dished. This was an upgrade on my wifes Dura-Ace 9000 equiped Domane. These are 1/2 pound lighter than the Bontager RL factory wheelset. With only 16/20 spokes on these wheels I probably will never ride them at my 220lb weight, but for a light rider you should have a great service life. One note, the C-24 and C-35 rims are only 21mm at the brake track. You have to go to the C-50 to get the wider rim.

Jenson USA Service is outstanding
Jenson USA was absolutely outstanding in helping to address a problem with my first set of C35s, very promptly resolving the problem by shipping out a new pair. I have nothing but good things to say about Jenson USA and highly recommend them.

Looking for a great wheel? Buy there.
I've had these wheels for about 9 months and 5,000 miles. They are light years ahead of the Reynolds wheels I replaced. They're lighter, smoother, and climb much better. I weigh 195 and haven't had any problems with truing or dish, so they're sturdier than one might think given the spoke count and weight. I couldn't be happier with these.

Great wheels
Ordered these online for store pickup since I was going to be in the area. Luis called me beforehand to confirm purchase and he set aside some new tires and tubes for me. When I arrived at the store Luis actually greeted me saying, "You must be Bob", remembering our call. He was really friendly and helpful. Put tires on and installed wheels in a jiffy. Good service, good price.

Awesome wheels
No problems. No complaints. This rev is really light when shod with Conti GP4S-23s and Conti Race Lights. Spins soooo smooth. No issues with braking - alum sides. Trick asymm rear wheel.

Dr Dave on Sep 5, 2016
Is this wheel compatible with a Shimano 10-speed 105 cassette?
DeWee on Jan 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: This 11 speed wheel is backward compatible with 10 speed 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace cassettes; all that is required is the use of two shims - one which should be in the box with the cassette, the other with the wheel.
Can I run regular brake pads with these wheels?
Are these tubeless compatible?
Susan on Oct 9, 2016
This wheelset is not the tubeless version so you cannot run tubeless. They make the same wheelset for tubeless tires (they are more expensive). You can use regular brake pads, however. The rims are aluminum.
