Wolf Tooth Oval Cinch Chainring
You've probably seen one of these "ovalized" chainrings by now, and have been slapped in the face by curiousness like most of us have. Do things really make a difference in efficiency? The master minds over at Wolf Tooth Components aren't promising you a pair of wings here, but they aren't hesitant to relay that these elliptical rings do in fact have a much different feel to them that can provide more efficiency and a smoother power output. Their team of testers report the most noticeable benefits come on punchy singletrack and hills, allowing less shifting and snappier acceleration.
Wolf Tooth's take on the Elliptical chainring has an ovality of 10% and timing of 112 degrees after TDC (top dead center). What this does is eliminates 2 teeth where your pedal stroke is the weakest and adds 2 teeth where your stroke exerts the most power. For example: a 34t chainring feels like a 32t in the weak part of your pedal stroke and a 36t in the part of the stroke where your legs have the most power.
This model of Wolf Tooth's Elliptical Chainring fits Race Face Cinch type cranks such as Turbine, Next SL and Sixc. Available in sizes 26-34 have an ideal 49mm chainline vs the Race Face direct mount ring chainline of 51mm.
- Direct Mount
- Made from 7075-T5 aluminum & black anodized
- Drop-Stop asymmetrical tooth design for the best wear life, chain retention and mud clearance
- 9, 10, 11 speed compatible
- Claimed Weight: 28t - 54g, 30t - 58g, 32t - 63g, 34t - 69g
- Designed and manufactured in the USA!
- 3mm Offset for Boost, 6mm Offset for Non-Boost
- Note: Use a 10 or 11 speed chain. If using a 9 speed drivetrain, plan to use a 10 speed chain (it will shift great), as the 9 speed chain fits too loosely on the ring.
Took about 15mins of pedaling to get used to the difference when compared to a normal round chain ring. It definitely helps with pedal cadence when climbing and seems to help improve traction as the torque transfer from pedaling feels to be more constant.
Fitted easily to a race face cinch crankset, no problems with chain line for 11 speed chain and 11-42 XT cassette.
