Wolf Tooth Elliptical GXP DM Chainring

Wolf Tooth Oval DM Chainring

You’ve probably seen one of these “ovalized” chainrings by now, and have been slapped in the face by curiousness like most of us have. Do things really make a difference in efficiency? The master minds over at Wolf Tooth Components aren’t promising you a pair of wings here, but they aren’t hesitant to relay that these elliptical rings do in fact have a much different feel to them that can provide more efficiency and a smoother power output. Their team of testers report the most noticeable benefits come on punchy singletrack and hills, allowing less shifting and snappier acceleration.

Wolf Tooth’s take on the Elliptical chainring has an ovality of 10% and timing of 112 degrees after TDC (top dead center). What this does is eliminates 2 teeth where your pedal stroke is the weakest and adds 2 teeth where your stroke exerts the most power. For example: a 34t chainring feels like a 32t in the weak part of your pedal stroke and a 36t in the part of the stroke where your legs have the most power.

This model of Wolf Tooth’s Elliptical Direct Mount Chainring has the same 6mm offset that SRAM’s Direct Mount rings do, replacing your existing chainring and spider, which is attached by 3 bolts on the back side. You would use these same three bolts to mount this ring.

Compatibility: SDM chainrings fit on SRAM cranksets with removable spiders: S2200, S2210, X9, X0, X01, XX1, X1 1400, Truvativ AKA Cranksets (GXP version), and newer S1400 (or X7). If the crankarm and the spider are all made from the same piece of aluminum it is not removable.

Wolf Tooth Elliptical DM Chainring Specifications:

  • Chainline is 50mm.
  • All chainrings feature our Drop-Stop tooth design and are made from 7075 Aluminum.
  • Use a 10 or 11 speed chain. If using a 9 speed drivetrain, plan to use a 10 speed chain (it will shift fine), as the 9 speed chain fits too loosely on the ring.
  • A T25 Torx wrench is required to remove the bolts that secure the chainring or spider to the crankarm. An L-wrench works best since the crank spindle may contact a socket adapter and prevent it from engaging properly.
  • Designed and manufactured in the USA!
  • Product weights: 30t - 65g, 32t - 70g, 34t - 75g,
  • Color: Black

Bottom line. It is easier to turn over the cranks.
Oval chainrings are making a comeback. Nowadays they are much better because they understand the clocking and timing better than before. It won't make you a XC racer overnight but they do help.

While they probably won't make you much faster, they will make you more efficient. Oval rings make it easier to turn the crank over at the top of the stroke ( think 11-1 o-clock)where you are the weakest and maximize the strongest part of the stroke (2-5 o-clock).

To me, it helps more if you have shorter legs because I think shorter legs do not create as much leverage as longer legs.

Where it really helps is in steeper climbs and more chunky technical climbs because you can turn the crank over easier in tough spots.

It is tough to go back to round once you get condition on oval rings though. You have to re-condition and build your muscles back because they focus more on different muscles.
