Wolf Tooth GC Cog For SRAM

Wolf Tooth GC Cog for SRAM

The introduction of 11-36T cassetes a few years ago changed mountain biking forever. The larger gear range made 1x drivetrains more practical, but some found that it still wasn't a wide enough gear range. This add-on cog replaces one of the middle cogs in your 10-speed cassette cluster, giving you an extra-low 40T or 42T granny gear without requiring you to upgrade your entire drivetrain!

Wolf Tooth's GC cassette cog is so big that when machining the first batch, the machinist thought he made a mistake! If being big is cool then the GC cassette cog is the coolest cog around.  This cog is made with the premium precision and finish one can expect from WTC, and this enables quite possibly the best feeling shift in the cassette. This cassette sprocket is for use only with SRAM brand 10spd X5, X7, and X9 cassettes. It is NOT compatible with any other brand or model of cassette.  The shift points are properly timed to the tooth locations on the 36T SRAM cog for optimal shifting performance.

Note on “B-screw”: A longer screw is almost never needed with SRAM derailleurs and only needed for about 50% of Shimano derailleurs. If you think you might need the longer B-screw, order one separately or just go to your local hardware store and pick up an M4 x 25 socket head cap screw.

You may need a longer chain than what is presently on your bike. Make sure that when shifted to the 40/42T cog, there is still some amount of forward travel possible with the rear derailleur cage. This is especially important on bikes with rear suspension. We have tested with Shimano, KMC & SRAM chains – all function well.

Compatible only with the following SRAM 10spd cassettes:

X5 11-36T (PG-1030)
X7 11-36T (PG-1050)
X9 11-36T (PG-1070)

Note: the GC 42 is not compatible with 2011 or older SRAM rear derailleurs due to the location of the upper jockey wheel. It is difficult or impossible to get satisfactory shifting with the 2011 or older SRAM rear derailleurs so it is not recommended to use the GC if you have one of these. The GC works great with the newer SRAM rear derailleurs however.

Check out the GC tech page @ Wolf Tooth for more details.

Features:

  • Requires removal of 17T or 15T cog from cassette
  • CNC machined in the USA
  • Compatible with only SRAM PG-1030, 1050, or 1070 cassettes

It took me long enough, I finally got a bluetooth...a blue 42 tooth to be precise. This sram compatable went on super easy on a 1070 cassette. I was part of a new build, a Niner ROS frame with a carbon Niner RDO 29er fork. The rest of the drivetrain comprises of a Sram 10 speed derailluer, thumb shifter and chain with a Turbine 32 tooth narrow wide chainring. The rear wheel is an WTB Race i23 laced 3x with Sapim spokes on a disc DT Swiss 350 9/10. I went with the 10+ rather than a Sram xd driver 1x11 because I don't spin out the 11 tooth cog very often and the ten speed parts availability is well represented everywhere and diverse.
Bottom line? It shifts flawlessly, is embarrasingly quiet, I can ussually find a gear to match my cadence and I go up no fewer hills than on my 2x10. I like it for it's ample efficiancy, shifting becomes a thoughtless process it's so simple, and I really like the ease of maintanance.

I really liked the look of this product and wanted it to work. I have been using OneUp 42t with no problems, but it wore out and I needed to replace it. Ended up trying the Wolftooth 42t. Once installed I could not get it to work right at all, even after speaking with Wolftooth directly. Took product back and got the OneUp and everything just worked like it was supposed to. The Wolftooth is a great product and I have set it up on my friends bikes with no problem, just would not work on mine?????

Comments about Wolf Tooth Components Wolf Tooth GC Cog For SRAM:

Purchased this cog as a replacement for the ethirteen 42t I installed last season. Initial impression with the Wolf Tooth is that it is much more stout which is evident in the increased weight (86g vs 70g on the e13). This is not necessarily a bad thing since the ethirteen gear was destroyed after only about 1 season. granted that was some aggressive climbing so it got used but still I would expect it to last longer, as my generic Sram 1050 still looks in great shape after 3 seasons.
This is my first run with the Wolf Tooth cog so the long term durability is still TBD but in the short term it installs super easy of course and shifts very smooth and quick, very minimal adjustment needed.
Plug and play, about as easy as it gets.

Comments about Wolf Tooth Components Wolf Tooth GC Cog For SRAM:

Great looking products that works as described. However have sram X9 type rear derailleur and needed a longer b screw even though it says it is not required. Just a minor detail. Other wise excellent product. Also will probably work better if you pirchase the 16T sprocket to complete the upgrade!!

I added the 40T Wolf Tooth to my 2016 Stump Jumper 29er FSR. Simply removed the 2nd smallest cassette cog and installed the 40T behind the SRAM 36T cog. Very simple upgrade that works with the stock SRAM x9 mid cage derailleur after adjusting the B-Tension screw. Ridden about a 80X on heavy hill climb workouts. So far so good.

Comments about Wolf Tooth Components Wolf Tooth GC Cog For SRAM:

i was on the fence about converting from 2x10 to 1x10. I liked the idea but was worried about the fitness and shifting becoming too clunky.

Wolf tooth makes their 42T Giant Cog for Shimano or SRAM. I have Shimano and I can tell you the shifting is fine (Long Cage XT Dreailleur without clutch).

From a difficulty perspective, the move from 24x36 to 30x42 is not really a change. It's the 30x36 as the next gear down that is a change! But it makes you a stronger rider. Go for it!
