Wolf Tooth GC Cog for SRAM
The introduction of 11-36T cassetes a few years ago changed mountain biking forever. The larger gear range made 1x drivetrains more practical, but some found that it still wasn't a wide enough gear range. This add-on cog replaces one of the middle cogs in your 10-speed cassette cluster, giving you an extra-low 40T or 42T granny gear without requiring you to upgrade your entire drivetrain!
Wolf Tooth's GC cassette cog is so big that when machining the first batch, the machinist thought he made a mistake! If being big is cool then the GC cassette cog is the coolest cog around. This cog is made with the premium precision and finish one can expect from WTC, and this enables quite possibly the best feeling shift in the cassette. This cassette sprocket is for use only with SRAM brand 10spd X5, X7, and X9 cassettes. It is NOT compatible with any other brand or model of cassette. The shift points are properly timed to the tooth locations on the 36T SRAM cog for optimal shifting performance.
Note on "B-screw": A longer screw is almost never needed with SRAM derailleurs and only needed for about 50% of Shimano derailleurs. If you think you might need the longer B-screw, order one separately or just go to your local hardware store and pick up an M4 x 25 socket head cap screw.
You may need a longer chain than what is presently on your bike. Make sure that when shifted to the 40/42T cog, there is still some amount of forward travel possible with the rear derailleur cage. This is especially important on bikes with rear suspension. We have tested with Shimano, KMC & SRAM chains €“ all function well.
Compatible only with the following SRAM 10spd cassettes:
X5 11-36T (PG-1030)
X7 11-36T (PG-1050)
X9 11-36T (PG-1070)
Note: the GC 42 is not compatible with 2011 or older SRAM rear derailleurs due to the location of the upper jockey wheel. It is difficult or impossible to get satisfactory shifting with the 2011 or older SRAM rear derailleurs so it is not recommended to use the GC if you have one of these. The GC works great with the newer SRAM rear derailleurs however.
But wait, there's more! We didn't forget about those of you who have 11-speed SRAM drivetrains. For you we have the 49t option that will extend the range of your 11-speed SRAM cassette. If you have an NX drivetrain, it drops right in! If you have XX1, X01, X1, or GX, you need a Shimano freehub driver, 11-42 cassette from SRAM, Shimano, or SunRace, and the GC49. The GC 49 is the latest addition to the legendary GC line and it's the biggest yet. The GC 49 cassette extender cog allow you to modify your 11 speed 11-42T cassette from SRAM or SunRace to create an ultra-wide range 11T-49T cassette. To achieve the best shifting, the GCs are optimized for Shimano or SRAM / SunRace cassettes. This includes 18T cassette cog for optimal gearing in the smaller cogs.

Bottom line? It shifts flawlessly, is embarrasingly quiet, I can ussually find a gear to match my cadence and I go up no fewer hills than on my 2x10. I like it for it's ample efficiancy, shifting becomes a thoughtless process it's so simple, and I really like the ease of maintanance.

Wolf tooth makes their 42T Giant Cog for Shimano or SRAM. I have Shimano and I can tell you the shifting is fine (Long Cage XT Dreailleur without clutch).
From a difficulty perspective, the move from 24x36 to 30x42 is not really a change. It's the 30x36 as the next gear down that is a change! But it makes you a stronger rider. Go for it!
