Comments about Yakima Super Joe Auto Rack:
This rack is solid in terms of construction and materials. Once mounted to the car it provides a stable platform to put bikes on. The cradles work well with a variety of frames and do a really good job of supporting downtubes. The straps are made of rubber and therefore do not scratch paint on bikes. They also stretch to fit around frames and create a good snug fit. Padding protects the car's paint as well.
There are several downsides however. Namely, the straps are quite hard to tighten. They must be yanked in directions that are not normal for a body to move in, and they must be yanked HARD. Also, it can be very hard to find places for the clips to hook onto a car. Then, once the straps are tightened and hooks placed, they must be removed and readjusted every time the rack is taken on and off, quite dissimilar to a hitch rack where all settings can be preserved. The rack also does not lock like a hitch rack, so it must be taken on and off repeatedly; quite a hassle. My last qualm is that it does not fit on hatchbacks of any kind, this means that it does not fit our Prius or Outback.
