The visually stunning carbon fiber construction of the SB-66 Carbon is sure to give you butterflies in your stomach like love at first site. Weiging in at a diminutive 6 pounds, the high modulus carbon fiber frame flaunts an agile and lively ride that can handle the assault and battery of the most unforgiving trails. Yeti wants your SB-66 Carbon to reamin as good-looking as it is good-riding, why not kill two birds with one stone? The very reason the SB-66 Carbon features custom guards with a polymer rubber coating to protect the undercarriage of the carbon fiber chassis from trail fragments. As you move in closer for a better glance you’ll begin to notice this isn’t just another single pivot, but an innovative suspension design called Switch Technology. The oversized main pivot actually contains a second pivot (lower pivot of the swing arm) that is offset within the main. This eccentric mechanism switches direction as the bike moves through its travel creating an optimized wheel path without unexpected spikes or wallows. Light, fast and efficient, the SB-66 has everything you've ever wanted in an all mountain machine. Its no wonder why the Yeti SB 66 won the “Mountain Bike” editor’s choice award.
At the beginning of the travel the eccentric link is rotating in a rearward direction, guiding the lower pivot of the swing arm rearward. This counter-clockwise motion coupled with the initial rearward wheel path creates an excellent pedaling platform, making the SB-66 Carbon pedal and climb crisply without sacrificing small bump sensitivity. The mid stroke has a flat linear shape, creating a large “sweet spot”, allowing the suspension to react better to bigger hits. Once the travel reaches about 100mm, the eccentric link starts to rotate in the forward direction. This means the rate at which the chain stay grows drops off quickly, allowing the suspension to work independently of chain forces. Because the suspension isn’t being impeded by chain growth in the last third of the travel, the smooth feel in the middle continues all the way to full compression without a harsh bottom out feeling.
Yeti Cycles knows that a frame forged by gods would be nothing without a reliable component set, which of course is why they went with SRAM to complete the drivetrain. SRAM lends its X-7 dependability and affordability to the shifters and front derailleur, while the smoothness and efficiency of X-9 is utilized for the rear derailleur. The Fox 34 Kashima coated fork with a 15mm axle and 160mm of travel paired with Fox CTD Adjust K+ (8.5”x2.5”) rear shock, is sure to gobble up rocks, roots, ruts and bumps. Truvative rounds out a solid cockpit with a T20 series stem and seatpost, and a T30 handlebar.
With Switch Technology gracing your rig, you'll be hounding for grades to climb, and what goes up must come down, and what comes down must eventually come to a halt, which is why the SB-66 comes with Avid Elixir 5 brakes and brake levers to provide maximum stopping power when desired. The SB-66 Enduro rolls on DT Swiss M1900 wheels, laced with Maxxis tires; a recipe for trail shredding.
Every detail on the SB-66 Carbon screams, “Ride me!” From the 6 inches of travel to the carbon fiber frame construction. So get off your couch and into the saddle of the SB-66, and wage battle on that daunting ascent that’s been looming over you, head to the bike park for an adrenaline fix, or ride your way to the top step of the podium.
