Yeti SB5.5 Carbon XT-SLX Bike
THE SB5.5 IS WHERE THE TRAIL, ALL-MOUNTAIN AND GRAVITY BIKE INTERSECT
Richie Rude, along with the rest of Yeti's in-house test team, agree that this lightweight bike eats up grueling technical climbs and hauls downhill. Forget any preconceived notions about 29ers, thanks to an impeccable frame design, shortened chain stays and aggressive suspension spec, this bike is easy to maneuver and feels lively and quick on the descents.
Utilizing the same design and geometry of the higher end SB5.5 TURQ series, the SB5.5 Carbon offers similar stiffness and durability with only a 240 gram (0.5 lb) increase in weight. The SB5.5 Carbon is built to be responsive and lively, while still capable of withstanding punishing descents.
The bike's 17.2 inch chainstays supporting the 29er wheel platform strike an optimal balance of stability and maneuverability. To achieve this shortened chainstay designers eliminated the front derailleur mount and utilized a Boost rear spacing, but still keept true to Yeti's classic long geometry. To balance the bike's front end, we chose to use a long travel 51mm offset fork combined with a 66.5 degree head angle. This allowed us to precisely tune the bike's mechanical trail and wheelbase.
Front rubber to rear rubber, this bike is spec'd out to be an enduro race machine. Your SB5.5 Carbon XT/SLX will come equipped with a Shimano drivetrain, brakes, and wheelset; Fox Performance suspension; and Race Face Turbine seatpost dropper, bar, and stem. This bike is armed and ready for park days and backcountry exploits, and is priced to impress.

I've compared times on trails I've ridden 26" bikes and 27.5" bikes with varying amounts of travel and it doesn't seem to matter. This bike makes me faster. I know what your thinking; that's bold talk for a speed-deficient fat man. But it's true. This bike has made me minutes faster on the climbs and seconds faster on the descents. It's stable when things get rowdy but somehow feels flickable when the singletrack gets tight and twisty. How you ask. Yeti came up with a design that employs cutting edge geometry with their Switch Infinity gizmo and - voila! - your fast. You think 66.5° is too slack a head tube angle for a 29r? Well Yeti says you're wrong... and I have to agree. The combination of head angle, fork offset and the Switch Infinity link all come together to create a work of art. A magic bike that inspires confidence. Now I float over rock gardens and technical descents at speeds my skill set usually doesn't accommodate. I swear on one section of trail I heard the 5.5 saying "Swap out the 30t chainring for a 34t so we can hit this section faster next time. I promise you won't miss that nasty old 30t on the climbs." So I did and now we are even faster. I also swapped out the stem for a zero° rise and removed a couple HS spacers to make weighting the front end a little easier (the 160 fork makes the front end tallish, but don't let that scare ya).
I can't even imagine how nice the XT build must be. Which leads me to the bike's only flaw. I can only give it 4.9 out of 5 stars because of the price. Other than that Yeti has outdone themselves with this one. See you out on the trail! I'll be the fat man passing you on a 5.5. Cheers!
Also, the crew at Jenson built this thing up as quickly as possible, which helped me out tremendously prior to racing in Moab, or Xanadu, depending on how you look at it.
