KTLA Bike to Work Week Banner

Did You Know?

May is National Bike Month and Jenson USA would like to celebrate bike commuting to work or school. Commuting, along with the added health benefits, can help save you money! Bike commuting uses no gas and keeps the wear and tear off of your car. Bike commuting will save you money on parking fees if you regularly have to pay for parking permits. Bike commuting gives you added health benefits without the cost of joining a gym! Whether you commute to save money, time or to add a little fitness to your life, your cycling experts at Jenson USA's can get you ready!

How Much Can I Save?

Not only is commuting by bicycle good for the environment, but it is great for your pocketbook. Use this simple calculator to estimate how many days of the week you are going to commute by bicycle and enter your estimated round trip distance, current gas cost and your cars miles per gallon (mpg). Our calculator will show your potential savings on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Other potential savings will come from experiencing less wear and tear on your car. With consistent bicycle commuting, you can use your savings to do something fun like a shopping trip or a vacation!

Getting Started...

  • Have one of Jenson USA's professional mechanics check out your bike to make sure the brakes work, the tires are safe and all the bolts are nice and tight. Have them help you adjust your saddle height and handlebars to fit you more comfortably. Don't live close to Jenson USA's Corona or Riverside, CA location? Check out the NBDA for a shop near you.
  • If you don't have a bike, check out a few of these bikes...
  • Figure out your route to work/school, where you will park your bike and how long the commute will take you
  • Many companies offer incentives for bike commuting. Check with your human resources department for commuting incentives.

What Kind of Gear Will I Need?

You won't need to dress like you are ready to ride the Tour de France, but commuting will require a few special items to ensure an enjoyable trip. Here are some commuting essentials:

  • Pump, tube and tire levers- The tire levers help remove the tire in the event of a flat, and your tube and pump will get you back on the road. Tubes come in a variety of styles. If you are not sure, contact our friendly customer service representatives and they will help you find the right one!
  • Helmet - Probably the most essential piece of your commuting kit. These days, helmets have evolved from the uncomfortable and ugly helmets of the past.  Choose from many styles that feature comfortable straps and buckles, universal fit and great looks. Top Tip-Make sure the front of your helmet covers your forehead and doesn't tilt back. This ensures maximum protection.
  • Cycling clothing - No, you don't have to look like a bike racer, but you can find comfortable clothing that will keep your regular clothing from getting too messy on you commute. Another advantage is the reflective and high visibility features on riding clothing. If you use flat pedals, you will have the advantage of using your normal sneakers and will be comfortable when walking around.
  • Gear Bag - You will need something to carry your clothes, lunch and other work/school essentials. Choose from backpacks, messenger style or pannier style bags. For the ultimate convenience the Timbuk2 Power Commute Messenger Bag will charge your phone or laptop while you ride!

I'm Ready to Commute...Now What?

Now that you have all the gear, what is the next step?

  • Find out where to park your bike at school or work. You may need to talk to you supervisor or co-workers to find the best place
  • Test out your route on the weekend to figure out how long it will be and if there are any adjustments you need to make
  • Practice fixing a flat at home so that you are prepared if it happens on the road

On the Road Tips

Having all your gear ready the night before will streamline your morning and get you out the door and on the road with a minimum of hassle. Some commuters will bring their clothes on the day before or the beginning of the week in order to minimize the gear that they have to carry. Start your morning with breakfast and allow plenty of time to get to your destination. Here are few more things to consider:

  • It is required to carry lights if you will be riding early in the morning before the sun is up or into the evening. A tail light can be mounted on the bike or on your bag/helmet for higher visibility.  Check out some of our lights here.
  • Try to choose routes with bike lanes or wide shoulders
  • Use sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the elements
  • Carry a water bottle and have a small snack handy. Fill your water bottle with fresh water and keep yourself thirst free! Don't want to take your hands of the bars? That's ok, use a hydration pack with a built-in water pack for hands free drinking. Your hydration pack will double as a gear pack too!
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflated tires require more work and energy to ride on.

Still Not Sure?

Beyond the health benefits and savings over driving your car to work, bike commuting also has other benefits.

  • According to the League of American Bicyclists, by riding a bicycle, 3.6 pounds of pollution per mile is prevented from entering the atmosphere.
  • Many companies offer incentives for bike commuting such as cash reimbursements, extra time off, raffles, and cafe credits.
  • If you have to pay for parking near your school or work, riding your bike can save you money on parking fees. If it is too far to ride, park in the further (cheaper) lots and bring your bike with you to ride from the parking lot to your class or office.
  • Too far to ride, but you still don't want to use a car? Most public transportation can accommodate bikes. Ride in on the bus or train with your bike and finish off your commute from the station on your bike! You can even check if your company subsidizes public transportation fees.
  • Find a co-worker to share your commute with.
