Take a look at the Five Ten Sleuth and it is clear they were designed in sunny California, as they boast that laid back CA style that begs you to go grab a pint or spin down to the market. Constructed with Stealth Marathon rubber outsole that provides perfectly tuned grip for freedom of movement and increased durability, just what you need for hitting the local skate park, riding the secret dirt jumps, or kicking it downtown. The Sleuth keeps on the pedals and won't wear out before they have given you a long life of use and no shortage of adventures. This is a do it all, mess around in the dirt, the park, or the local bike shop, type of shoe.
Shoes look and feel great. I have not tried this rubber before but on the first ride having switched out from wearing running shoes riding the difference was remarkable. Do yourself a favor and get some flat shoes if you ride flats. Color is also stylish and can be worn to the bar for an after ride drink!
First pair of Five Tens, I had to order blindly without trying them on. I usually wear an 11 or 11.5 size in D or E width with dress or sport shoes. I ordered these in size 11.5 and the fit perfectly. I was surprised there is plenty of width too, def did not run narrow. The soles are incredible, I'm using RaceFace Atlas pedals and the two stick together almost like a pair of SPD pedals/shoes would. I'm glad I purchased and plan to stay with the brand.
These shoes are great! They are as stiff as normal 5:10s but are less bulky and feel lighter on the foot. They share the same rubber technology as 5:10s other shoes so they perform fantastic on and off the pedal. The shoes are also much more attractive than other 5:10s and could easily be worn every day.
PROS: Handles Well, Rugged, Versatile, Smooth Ride, Lightweight, Great Components
The good: lightweight yet still stiff-soled. They do look more like vans or other deck shoes so people who don't get them dirty might feel they would wear them around town more than the the bulky, utilitarian looking Freeriders (but whose shoes are NOT thrashed and muddy/dirty if they're actually riding? You going to wear dirty shoes around town just 'cause they look like Vans?)
The bad: they're just not as sticky as Freeriders. The pattern on the bottom allows the shoe to move around noticeably more. I ride Canfield Crampon flat pedals that are essentially bear traps, the pins are so gnarly-grabby. When I step on them with Freeriders, I am stuck. I have to lift my foot off the pedal and set it back down to change position. With these Sleuths? My feet bounce around on chatter enough that I notice having to reposition my feet repeatedly throughout a dh.
I bought these because my Freeriders were getting a little thin in the ball of the foot after two years of riding twice or three times a week, the Sleuths were cheaper, and they got good reviews for their appearance and stiffness. I wore the Sleuths for two or three weeks before I put them on the shelf to collect dust while I wore my old, sticky Freeriders.
