The bulk and restriction that comes with wearing protective guards is enough to make many downhillers contemplate going commando (no pads) on the next run. POC's Joint VPD AIR Elbow Guards take this issue by the horns, offering a low profile design that employs lightweight, impact absorbing VPD (VISCO-ELASTIC POLYMER DOUGH) compound. This allows the AIR Elbow Guard's to mold to the body's contours and transition from soft to hard during impact, so trying to decide between comfort and safety is a decision of the past. The reinforced stretch fabric and neoprene anti-slip on the inside do wonders to keep the elbow guard secured in place and ready to take a hit.
I bought these pads looking for a comfortable and lightweight pad for downhill riding, primarily Northstar.
Unfortunately these pads, like so many other elbow pads, slide down in rough terrain.
Perhaps for trail riding they would be fine, but you would not get halfway through your downhill run before these pads would slide down to your wrists. The lack of a strap at the top, and the small area of coverage leads to a pad that does not feel secure on your arm.
I know that these pads are designed for trail riding, and I think if your ride is mostly cranking uphill, then these pads may work for you. But if you're doing any serious descending, you will very likely have problems with these pads sliding down.
On the plus side this is one of the most comfortable elbow pads I've ever worn. The level of protection is still pretty good despite it being a slimmed down version of POC's VPD elbow pads
These pads are more evidence to me that elbow pads can never be comfortable, offer good protection, and not slide down. You must choose two of the three. In this case you get comfort and protection at the cost of non secure fit.
Save yourself the trouble of returning these if you like to go downhill and stay away from them.
The pretty comfortable. I had a good crash last week and they held it for the most part. Some rocks got and underneath and scratch me other than that no broken bones. I would recommend them but beware they are very small
