Adjusting your seat post has never been so easy thanks to dropper seatposts. The Race Face Turbine Dropper Seatpost features 125mm of travel for all-day comfort on the bike. The seatpost functions well in all conditions, even in freezing temperatures. A mechanical lock comes into play to support the rider's weight for added security while riding.
I have owned and setup many dropper posts in my day including ks lev (internal and externals), fox, specialized, rockshox , and raceface.
I have to say the design of this post has only one positive that you can screw and unscrew it easily for cleaning or swapping to another frame if wanted.
That being said the setup of this dropper post is a nightmare compared to any of its competition. It is a known fact even by raceface as they have a posted video for dealing with all the issues and an extensive walk thru i did with the district representative after talking to three different people at raceface who said they would have to get it in and inspect it before sending me a new one. Mind you I purchased it brand new and had the receipt.
I know my stuff and am a mechanic for a major dealership and car line so when it comes to mechanical objects I'm not a weekend warrior.
He ended up admitting there was an issue with the internal brake not locking and told me i had to then go thru a shop for warranty that he couldn't deal with me directly.
Even though i was super annoyed at the whole process and raceface at that point I will give credit where credit is due. Rob at The Hub in Pisgah , NC took awesome care in wanting my return to go smooth (purchased a frame thru them not the dropper) and even offered to pick it up personally from me when he was visiting my local city 3 hrs away from the shop.
All in all if your in the mountains of NC and need or want a bike shop. Hit these guys up !
Major problems i had : *post would not stay up but act like a pogo with any more then 12 psi. *raceface states that pressing the level completely resets the dropper (who doesnt mash the button when a hill climb comes ?!?) *customer service was hoop after hoop and will not deal with customer directly. *raceface knows there were issues with the first batch of these but it was like pulling teeth for them to admit it.
You want a dropper buy a fox transfer or ks lev and be done !
This is my second Turbine dropper post. The first one purchased in 2016 started leaking air when the weather turned cold. I returned after 8 months. Was without it for a month while Raceface evaluated it. They replaced it with a new one. All was good until the weather turned cold again. I have had this post only 6 months. Now it will not hold air more than a week. I wouldn’t buy this again. Adding air is a pain. You have to remove the saddle to access the schrader valve to add air. Will be sending this back for warranty.
I'm not discounting anybody else's experience with this dropper, just sharing my experience, which has been worry-free. I purchased a 100mm for my first bike when these were brand new, and later a 125mm for my next bike. I never had any issues with either of them. They worked flawlessly.
Setup can be a bit complicated, but if you follow the directions (and preferably watch a good install video), you should be fine. They have recently added a little tool to help get the actuator set up more easily too. The only other semi-criticism I might have is that the return speed is pretty fast on this dropper, even if you lower the pressure. You will want to make sure you are out of the way when that seat heads north!
I’ve got this post on my fat bike. I haven’t had too many issues with it except in the cold AF Wisconsin weather. Anything under 0 F, the air canister can not support my weight and the post will start to drop. I had to get a stop collar for it so I can ride in cold weather. My second fat bike is getting a Transfer. Other than that, it performs flawlessly.
I had two of these (1 on my wife's bike). Both of them have been non stop headaches. First summer it was sticky and didn't work well at all. Warrantied the dropper with Race Face and it barely lasted the next summer. Finally bit the bullet and bought the Fox Transfer today so I can toss this into the trash.
