The new Apex Brakeset from SRAM was designed with high performance and good looks. Featuring Dual Pivot performance combined with a external centering adjuster, proprietary pad compound the Apex Brakeset offers a powerful response when actuated.
Fitted these to replace the low-end stock brakes on my bike, as the Apex set was only marginally more expensive than buying good pads and holders for those mediocre calipers. Wow. These are well-made, look nice, and are considerably lighter than most anything else in the price range. The modulation and feel is great when paired with some older ('09) Sora levers. The included pads (SRAM/Swisstop) are great so far. Would not hesitate to use these on any bike.
PROS: Easy to Use, Good pads, Durable, Compatible, Lightweight
BEST USES: Commuting, Serious Racing or Training, Casual Riding
Overall these brakes have been a fantastic experience, saved my keester more than once. Good construction, well designed, easy installation, quick release for tire changes. If your looking for something that will never need to be upgraded unless you switch to STI shifters you've found your mate.
$40 something for decent calipers was hard to ignore. They come with a bunch of different sizes of recessed nuts so you'll likely have the one you need. The rear caliper uses one too so I had to drill out the hole in the frame a little to make it fit. They work well and look good. Maybe not to the snootiest but that's their problem.
Like everything else in the Apex group, they have great functionality for the price. The biggest draw back is the weight but other than that they are great. These weigh 308g a pair vs. the Force groups 280g a pair. This really isn't that much making them a great value!
Got these for a rebuild of an older bike, using them with Shimano 105 5700 shifters.
Installation was easy; pad adjustment was great (no squeaking even the first time out), look sharp.
These are great replacements for the decade-old house brand brakes I used to have. Not flexy at all. The first time I used them, I almost locked up the tires - there's next to no flex after they contact the tire.
Works well with pulling wheels on and off - flip the release lever and it opens WAAY up.
I use these brakes on my road bike, and they have been great for all the rides I've done. They stop quickly, and have a nice feel to them. The only drawback would probably be weight, but for the price I can't complain about that.
These replaced a pair of 13 years old Tektro calipers on my old road bike restoration project. They certainly look light, skeletal almost, even if I can't perceive any obvious weight difference by just holding them in my hands. I combined them with Shimano 105 shifters. Braking feels somewhat different comparing to the Ultegra brakes that I am used to. SRAM seems to engage earlier when squeezing the levers while the brake pads seem to produce less friction. I am considering replacing the pads but first will try them with Shimano pads I already own to see if that makes any difference. Now this is obviously my subjective observation or more just a feeling. But no means I am suggesting thet these brakes are unusable or don't work for what they were designed for. Bottomline: The price was right and these brakes are satisfactory for my spare/bad-weather training bike.
