Snapping a rear derailleur hanger is a common occurrence, especially in mountain biking. Rear derailleur hangers are designed to snap on impact in order to protect your rear derailleur and frame from damage. It is much easier and cheaper to replace a derailleur hanger than replace your entire rear derailleur or bicycle frame. A hanger typically costs between $20 and $40, a mid-range rear derailleur costs around $50 to $100, and a high-end derailleur can cost up to $500. Here at JensonUSA, we have a wide selection of rear derailleur hangers and bike dropouts. When you hanger sacrifices itself to save your rear derailleur, you’re going to need a new hanger.
Some derailleur hangers are incorporated into removable rear dropouts of the frame. A rear dropout like this usually includes a threaded hole for the rear axle to tighten into. If you have this type of dropout and your derailleur hanger breaks or bends, you will need to replace the entire dropout to achieve optimal gear performance. Since the hanger is only on the drive-side of the bike frame, you will only need to replace the drive-side of the dropout.
There are thousands of different derailleur hangers and dropouts out there. Some bike companies use the same hanger for several series of bikes, but a lot of bikes have their own unique hanger design. It’s a good idea to have a backup derailleur hanger in case your current one fails. If you are on a riding trip and snap your hanger, there is a high chance the local bike shops in the area won’t have the hanger you need, especially if they aren’t a dealer of the bike you have. A backup hanger can be the difference between a ruined trip or the best trip of your life.
Unless you’re running your bike single speed or have internal hub gears, your bicycle is equipped with a hanger. Replaceable hangers are easy to carry with you while you’re riding, so don’t get stranded.
