Tried these after disliking the feel of the Contacts. Tread pattern feels more consistently locked in and allows for small adjustments. Sole is stiff, but easily walkable. Neoprene cuff seems unnecessary/ineffective, so I wouldn't make any decisions based on it. Breathable and dry quickly.
I've only worn these for one ride, but they seem really nice. They grip my pedals (Shimano Saints) really well without keeping me from repositioning my feet if necessary. In other words, grip levels are a little less that FiveTens, but still more than sufficient for the blue and black rated trails I ride. They fit just slightly large - I wear a size 11 shoe so I went with the 46 recommended for an 11.2, and might possibly have been ok with the next size down. They seem like they will break in nicely and fit really well as I wear them more though. Overall I would definitely recommend these shoes, especially if you have the opportunity to try them on at your LBS to make sure you are getting the right size.
Started riding with flats for the first time this season. (See: https://www.rideottawa.com/blogs/news/what-i-have-learned-switching-from-clipless-to-flat-pedals)
I ride a lot (I instruct) so my shoes wear out pretty fast in general. I rarely get more than 1.5 seasons form any shoe. Because I didn't think I would use flats all season, I purchased some oldShimano AM41's (love them) and a pair of RaceFace Atlas pedals. I pretty much destroyed the sole on the AM's in 3 month from regular use. ( I also destroyed a pair of Five Ten Kestrel Lace shoe in 3 months last year and the warranty took 9 months so I was not buying Five Ten again.)
These GR7's are sweet. They are stiff enough for DH and Trail but flex enough for me when I'm instructing off the bike. The material is rubberized fabric that is thin and breathes pretty well,. So far not showing any wear. The neoprene cuff keeps rocks and debris out of the show as intended. (which is an annoyance with the Kestrel Five Tens,) The lace elastic on the top is a nice touch and keep laces away from flat pedal pins.
The sole on the GR7's really hooks well with my pedals and after 3 months there is virtually no sole wear or tear. The sole rubber is sticky (not as much at Five Ten) and walking on wet rocks is stable and grippy.
I'm a fan of these shoes. I feel like these are going to take some serious abuse.
