Smith Optics has entered the world of high-end road with a bang! When Smith first introduced their Forefront mountain bike helmet, its popularity spread like a wild fire for its inimitable use of Koroyd honeycomb structure. Upon first glance, some would snarl at the obvious distinct aesthetics, but mount it upon your head and you'd be quick to join the hype. Smith has taken this novel protective material and integrated it into a dedicated road helmet that's both light and aero enough to be worthy.
Koroyd is a honeycomb-like structure comprised of thousands of co-polymer tubes that have been thermally welded together, forming a lightweight impact material that also breathes better than EPS or foam. Koroyd replaces a good fraction of the conventional EPS foam, offering 30% more impact absorption while reducing weight and size, as well as enabling direct ventilation. Smith's Aerocore construction coalesce a more traditional EPS liner and plastic shell with the Koroyd layer to increase airflow and improve temperature regulation by allowing more vents to be placed throughout helmet, without compromising comfort and safety.
This edition of the Overtake Helmet is equipped with the patented MIPS system to reduce the rotational forces to the brain in the case of an oblique impact. Where most helmets are tested for vertical impacts, studies have shown that the human brain is more sensitive to oblique impacts. MIPS technology mimics nature's own method of reducing forces transferred to the brain in the event of a crash. When subjected to an oblique impact, a membrane between the brain and skull allows the brain to slide along the inner surface of the skull, which ultimately reduces the forces transferred to the brain. MIPS helmets use a low friction layer between the shell and liner to mimic this process, which significantly reduces the forces transferred to the brain.
Blanketed under the Overtake's progressive safety design, the low-profile padding reduces the overall size of the helmet to produce aerodynamic capacities that rival the best in the biz. Even though there are lighter road and XC helmets to be had, at 250 grams the Overtake is by no means an anchor, and ultimately you won't find one that carries the overall level of safety, comfort, and performance in the same package.
As Smith hits the nail on the head (no pun intended) when it comes to formidably blending protection with comfort and style, the Overtake considers the small details such as the retention system that uses a single dial, simple strap, and a few manual adjustment options, for an insanely user friendly, yet effective mechanism. As Smith's roots lay in the eyewear sector, they've integrated an eyewear dock that allows you to easily store your sunglasses back or front-facing.
